Default My frustration

So this new guy at work, who also happend to be good friends with some of my friends, is a big HD DVD guy. It didnt bother me at first (I kinda thought it would be interesting), but then we started talking about it.... Long story short he believes that HD DVD will win because "the average Amerian consumer is an idiot and when they hear the word Blu-ray, they think, what is that? But when the average american consumer hears HD DVD, they think hmm, DVD I know what that is and HD stands for High Definiton so these are High Definition DVDs cool."

I pointed out to him that Blu-ray was outselling HD DVD 2 to 1 in the U.S., 4 to 1 in Europe, and 9 to 1 in Japan. I also pointed out to him all the studio and manufacturer support Blu-ray has compared to HD DVD. I talked about how the PS3 "trojan horse" strategy has been working well by telling him that even when HD DVD standalone players were outselling Blu-ray standalone players Blu-ray still managed to keep an attach rate of 2 to 1, thus proving the PS3 strategy works.

Now here is the source of my frustration. After telling him ALL this. He did not disagree with me on any point I made. He just dismissed it by saying at this early point NONE of that matters. He said that HD DVD has a 90% chance of winning because the average consumer will recognize "HD" and "DVD" and buy it. He didnt even offer any of the arguments HD DVD fans usually use like "the players are cheaper" or "30 GB is enough." He just said that people will buy HD DVD because the average consumers will recognize the phrase and he said the only reason Blu-ray is winning now is because the "early adopters" are the kinds of people who care and will look more into the formats. According to him the average consumer will turn the tide with their stupidity and laziness. The sad part is not that he actually believes this. The sad part is that now I have to work with the moron.

Tell him nobody had ever heard of "DVD" before in 1997.

ask him how many VCDs he has. After all no one knows (literally) what DVD stands for but video compact disk is self explanatory. Yup J6P sure picked VCD DVD never had a chance.

Having a name without 'DVD' in it is actually a good thing... How many people do you know of that think a Blu-ray will play in their DVD player?

Last week when I was working at Target, a guy came in and wanted to return the HD-DVD of Planet Earth. He said, "I just bought the $88 Magnavox DVD player, and this box says 'HD players only'. Long story short, I helped him exchange it for the regular DVD set.

Long story short - there's a good differentiation between DVD and Blu-ray, not so much between DVD and HD-DVD. (Quality wise and name wise )

You could point out the average ignorant consumer is more likely to bring home something called "HD-DVD" under the mistaken impression it will provide a hi-def experience on his/her standard DVD player.

edit: bkbluray beat me to it!

When I first heard the phrase "blu ray"....I felt intrigued. Like what is this "blu ray"...I need to find out. Whereas when I first heard the phrase "HD DVD", to me it sounded like more of the same. Because of this, I dont think people will rush to adopt technology that feels like a more exspensive version of a technology they're already using.

By adopting blu ray technology...to me....it felt like I was taking a bigger leap forward. to something newer. something different. something better.

Now, of course i did NOT choose this format based solely on it's namesake (I did my homework like everybody else). But I do feel like the name played a part in catching my attention.

True, the name to me suggests something new and exciting, instead of more of the same. Instead of getting a "High Definition DVD experience" I'm getting something completely different (and it doesn't register in my mind that it's the same in any way).

I tried having a conversation with some work mates of mine (computer techs) and they believed HD-DVD would win (I disagreed) one of the tech fired the "it;s cheaper" argument and the other said he would get an HD-DVD player because it was HD, it tried to explain Bluwas as well but he believed since HDtv's exist they'd play better with HD-DVD, and that really bothers me, how could a computer tech believe such nonsense?

Actually, correct and wrong:

DVD was "formalized" as Digital Versatile Disk. This was done so as to encompass the non-video uses of the disk.

Here's the link to the WIKI article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd

Nope. It was Digital Video Disc in the very early days then they changed it to Digital Versatile Disc due to the media being used in the computer world. Now, they've done away with that also and it's just DVD. It's no longer an abbreviation for anything.

Edit: Darn you Rup_Muk, you beat me to the punch. But, it's no longer Digital Versatile Disc. Look it up.

I would say to him that a person who has invested in a high def TV ( it is an investment) probably read about HDTV's before buying it. With a format war going on you would hope the would "Google" both. If you Google Blu Ray this is the website that is # 1.

I wonder how many people know what Blu-ray and HD-DVD is. I'm think the regular joe doesn't know yet.

Just the other day my girlfirend was talking to her sister & she told her i was collecting blu-ray movies.

The sister then said "he's collecting blue movies???!!!"

My girlfriend had to explain to her that it wasn't porn.

I would like to know where he got that 90% figure for HD DVD to win. I know one thing that comes to mind. "Hey Rocky watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat."
I am not sure how he can just dismiss everything that was said but he is partly right. There is not enough HDM selling period for it to make much of a difference. But it is selling enough to keep those studios producing it. I think we have some real good tests in the next few weeks. Since Disney is releasing 2 films on both DVD and Blu-ray at the same time. We all know DVD will kill the Blu sales but I hope that the % will be closer than anyone thinks.

DVD means "not good enough."

People who say "it's good enough" end up marrying Beth from accounts receivable.

Those who ask for and demand more marry their dream girl.

Oh, ladies, just switch that for your own tastes.

Edit: If your name is Beth and you work in accounts receivable, I'm sorry. The above post was purely fictional and any real-life depictions are purely coincidental.

I always thought Blu-ray was a LOT easier to explain to someone than HD DVD. I could describe Blu-ray in one sentence. I could almost give a complete description of Blu-ray in 2 sentences. I can't do that with HD DVD.

Blu-ray (1 sentence):
Blu-ray is called Blu-ray because it uses a blue laser instead of the standard red laser for DVD.

Blu-ray (2 sentences):
Blu-ray uses a blue laser that allows it to store 5 times the information DVD can in the same amount of space. Using a blue laser over DVD's red laser allows you to have 5 times the PQ and 10 times the SQ.

There you go. How simple was that?!

many still confused by upconvert.

...Very nice that 40gb PS3 will come with Blu ray disc... now people without HDTV will have to understand that they need HDTV to appreciate Blu Ray...

But for those with HDTV already they can wow over the quality and buy more Blu Rays.
