Will Blu Ray DVDs play on 1080i Resolution?

Hi,

This is my curent TV SET:

Broadcast Format Supported 1080i (HDTV) • 480p (EDTV) • 480i (SDTV) • 540p

I want to buy a PS3 mainly for it's Blu Ray dvd option and of course for games, not to mention the fact that 20th Century Fox has sided with Blu Ray. I also have a bunch of PS2 games I wouldnt mind playing from time to time.

My questions are:

1.) Will my TV set support a PS3 and Blu ray dvds at 1080i resolution?

2.) After reading this I am confused as to what cables I should buy if any?: Also, to suit your TV's specification, you can now select the video output format (automatic, RGB, or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr) for Blu-ray disc playback using an HDMI cable.

3.) Does my TV have/need HDMI.

4.) Which is the latest firmware update and are they easy to get/install?

5.) Do I need to buy a remote control or does it come with a basic one?

6.) WIll I see a huge differance with my Blu Ray Dvds on 1080i resoltion compared to the dvds im currently watching on my PS2.?

7.) Do I get XBOX and HD/DVD instead since they fully support 1080i?

Would appreciate any help and simple answers thx!

1. yes your ps3 will play blu-rays on 1080i and the picture is still stellar if your tv is set right. I started out with a 1080i tv with my ps3

2. The ps3 only comes with composite cables so your going to want to go with an HDMI cable to get that crisp 1080i picture

3. Your tv should have an HDMI in jack on it, check to make sure before you purchase the ps3 as a blu-ray player because you will need it

4. The latest firmware for the ps3 is always available on the ps3 by going to the system update menu

5. You can use your controller or you can get the ps3 blu-ray remote. I got the remote and its pretty sweet cuz its blue-tooth so you dont have to point it directly at the console to work it!

6. Yes of course! You will notice a huge difference between standard dvd on a ps2 and blu-ray on your ps3!

7. Don't even think about buying into the HD/DVD garbage you are making the right decision by thinking blu-ray! blu ray is superior in every aspect and the best part about it is that the overwhelming studio support blu-ray has!

Yea I use 1080i and it is a HUGE difference than standard dvd, trust me you'll love it!!

1080i Blu-rays will look much, much better than 480p DVDs. They will also look much better than 'upconverted' DVDs.

I don't see an HDMI input on your TV specs, though. You can still run component out to get analog 1080i - many people say this works great.

The only limitation of not using HDMI is that the PS3 does not allow 1080p over component cables (you need HDMI), but this is not a concern for you because your TV isn't capable of 1080p anyway.

To the Original Poster, one note about that is that the PS3 also upconverts your regular DVD's, with several options for how to handle that. They look a ton better when upconverted, and the PS3 is my primary DVD player now because of this. And also, like the other poster said, do pick up a Blu-ray remote control (Sony branded), that is specifically for movie viewing. It is worth the price, if you plan to watch a lot of movies. I love it, and the batteries last a very long time in it. It is Bluetooth as well.

...not important. Long explanation to it, but not something you need to worry yourself with.

Your TV has a DVI input...you will need an HDMI-DVI cable.

the PS3 updates either via wifi or cable connection, usually takes a few minutes with a good connection. Its cake.

5.) Do I need to buy a remote control or does it come with a basic one?

you can use the video game remotes, they work fine. But if you like conventional remotes, then you want to buy the BD Remote. ($20)

Oh My. I had never seen that comparison until now, crackinhedz. I watched Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray... it's easy to take stuff like that for granted, but my goodness, the Sandman looks amazing in those scenes. Makes me want to watch it all over again just to see that again. Though this time, I'll probably skip over the whole song and dance Tobey thing.

Well, I got my new PS3 60GB 3 days ago, with a HDMI/DVI Cable (From PS3 to TV), I already had an optical audio cable (TOSLINK) so I plugged that from the ps3 into my JVC Receiver (does not have HDMI Inpt/Output, too bad). All I really want now is the PS3 remote and 20 Blu-Rays and 10 PS3 games in the next few months.

HDMI audio can wait until I move into a new house, I'll settle for optical sound with DTS and 5.1 Surround for now.

Very happy with the purchase.

P.S. If you guys have any other suggestions on how to get better sound or video, besides buying a new TV or a new Receiver, please do tell .

I'll be very fine with 1080i HDMI Video and 5.1/DTS Optical Surround Sound Audio for now.
