Question Will we ever be able to throw out our DVDs?

I'm looking at my DVD collection, and ignoring for the moment the fact that buying every single disc as a Blu-ray would be expensive, I wonder... will it even be possible to re-buy them all?

My question is - Will the studios ever re-release/remaster everything that they ever released on DVD? (You can ignore indie films and rare stuff, I'm just talking about the big studios) I think that ever VHS has probably been re-released as a DVD, there's nothing I can think of that hasn't been. Will it be the same again?

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not saying how much back catalogue you think SHOULD be replaced, I'm saying how much you think WILL be replaced.

Edit: I think grammatically that 4th option should have said "fewer" not "less", but whatever. Me fail English? That unposable!

It's all a matter of time. Might take 5-6 years but id say yes it will especially when blu get mass produced it will becomes more affordable to do the obscure titles.

I sold most of my dvd collection on ebay this past year. Do it while you still can before everyone goes blu because the more you wait the harder it will be

Actually, regular dvd will always be around because not all titles will be on blu-ray. Blu-ray will most likely be an optional

I would say the vast majority, but not all. But this probably will be many years out, like 6-8 years.

I browsed eBay and found that most DVDs were going for the 99p start price even really awsome movies, and ones that haven't even been announced for Blu-ray. Only the very new releases seem to be going for more.

Definently a buyers market on DVDs right now. People are all either Buying in Blu and/or HDUD, or they are holding back on buying anything until the format war is over.

Well, first quarter is usually a bad time to sell because a lot of people tend to be a little short with all the big bills they incurred as a result of holiday spending.

I thought about this for a long time and wondering if buying movies is worth it anymore because a better format always comes along and beats the ones you have now. Now I'm thinking about what format is going to be better than blu-ray

Oh yeah, I hadn't thought of that. Plus there's people with unwanted gifts they need to unload. Well I'm selling some stuff anyway, I need cash to buy more Blu-rays.

personally I think Blu-ray will be the last movie disc format, It'll hang on for a LONGGGGGG time, then be replaced by downloads when HD download technology is feasible. (Which of course is a long way off right now, contrary to why some misguided companies might think. But I think it'll be possible eventually.) I bet Microsoft will try to make it's come-back in HD downloaded, man they'll just LOVE the DRM restrictions they can inflict on the consumer. And remember, when they re-re-re-release those digital downloads in a brand new CODEC at a higher resolution, you can't even sell the old version on eBay, cause you won't own a copy, you'll own a limited, non-transferable licence. You wont even be able to lend a movie to your friend!

Arg.. sorry, RANT MODE OFF.

In any case, it's always worth buying movies if you like them enough to watch them more then once or twice, or just love having the sexy case on your shelf, whether you buy them on Blu-ray or DVD is up to you.

I think eventually we'll see everything that is currently on DVD being available on Blu, if only for the simple reason that studios love to double dip! Sure, the lower profile cult classics will take longer than those that appeal to wider audiences, but they will come. (Personally, I'd love to see the opening sequence of Silent Running on Blu.)

I know that my 1000 SD collection that I had in around october 06 is down to about 600 and change. I have been selling them left and right so I dont end up with a huge collection that I cant sell like my LaserDiscs.

Definitely think everything will be replaced, we already have dozens of catalog titles, new releases always come out Blu, and for the more obscure titles? Think of it this way: we have anime from the 80's, nature documentaries, travel DVDs, and Girls Gone Wild on Blu...I find it hard to believe pretty much everything won't be blu at one point in time.

I think you have exactly the right interpritation of what will happen there.

It's not even just movie studeos. I LOVE Nintendo but how many times have they released the original Metriod? hmmm:
  1. Origonal Metroid release on the NES
  2. Bonus for connecting Metroid Prime to Metroid Fusion via link cable
  3. NES Classics Series
  4. Remake on the GBA as Zero Mission
  5. Wii Virtual Console

Also I was sure they had it as a hidden item in Animal Crossing but I may be wrong there.

They also re-released Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda a bunch of times.

I hope I can rebuy all of my favourite movies on Blu. If there are ones I can't, and I don't like them all that much, I'll probably just sell the DVDs and do without. I don't own anything TOO obscure, but I expect I'll have to hang on to one or two DVDs for 5 years or more while writing angry letters to the distribution company telling them to get Bluifiing!

Edit:

Speaking of Nintendo, I soo hope they remaster The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and The Legend of Zelda (TV Series) That would totally
