Default decided on my receiver, speaker options?

i am pretty set on getting the Onkyo tx-sr605

now i need some advise tips whatever on speakers, who makes a quality product at a good price?

my budget for speakers is $500-1000

i am gonna wait on the 7.1, just wanted the option on the receiver for future use, i would like to get a 5 piece set for the 5.1 hd sound.

i have a Definitive Technology Powerfield 12" subwoofer from 1996, would i need to get a new sub or would i be fine saving some money and using this one?

i was also considering that if my budget is not enough to get anything of quality i would get the L/R/C channels first and the rear 2 at a later date.

any advice, info, or suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out this site for excellent prices on Infinity speakers. Free and very fast shipping too. My buddy just ordered a 5.1 Infinity speaker set up.

speakers from Definitive Technology, PSB and Klipsch are really good. you also many want to have a look at the offerings from Polk and Energy.

Just put in a pair of PSB Alpha B1 speakers ($279 a pair) with a PSB subwoofer ($349). Its like hearing new audio from all my BDs and CDs. I put my old cambirdge fronts in the surround position for now until I get PSB for the rear and center.

what in your opinion are some of the best front/center speakers? i don't need top of the line but i wanna still be impressed with the quality, i do have a few speakers not worthy of note i can use for surround.

so is my 1996 active definitive tech 12"sub outdated or would this be able to keep up with the receiver and bluray sound?

Check out Paradigm. I got a deal and spent < $1000 for Monitor 7 Towers and the CC-290. You may be able to squeeze in some Atoms for rears on your budget.

I second Infinity.

I have 2 Beta 50's, 2 Beta 20's, and a Beta C360 and I absolutely love them.

Price/performance they're hard to beat.

They are rather large though and are all rear-firing so you need to have them away from the wall a bit to get the most out of them. If that's not a problem I recommend you take a look

From what i've been reading it seems that most people don't like the little cube sets for their front left and right, apparently they say that the little ones don't reproduce the sound and quality they should for intense action scenes, shootouts whatever, since i am more then likely buying a piece by piece set, should i be looking primarily at tower speakers for my front left and right? i am gonna hang onto my old sub for now so basically i just need some REALLY NICE front left and center, brand and model numbers would be really appreciated.

also im looking at the onkyo705 now, 805 little pricey and the 705 seems to have everything i want.

also what is the deal with these "soundbars", is that basically what is in my tv already to produce its surround effect.

3 speakers left right and center for around 1000 usd give or take a little.....WHAT WOULD YOU BUY.

i understand that my bluplayer is limited on what sound it can do, somewhere down the road i will upgrade to a better one, is the onkyo705 a pretty good future proofer if i want to have hidef audio at some point.

what can the bdp-s300 do sound wise anyways? just dvd sound or anything hidef at all?

Uncompressed PCM.

also, if you have an older receiver you can connect the S300 with Multichannel Analog.

Definitely go with a new Onkyo. For speakers, Infinity and Polk are great, you should even consider KEF KHT 3005 (little over the $1000 budget you mentioned, but it comes with a sub. Heres a Review).

In a related note, if someone had the 605 and went for the Monitor 7 towers or something similar, then paused for a few months (to pay other bills ), would it be better to first add a comparable center channel and save up for a sub, or first get the sub for a 2.1 system (if there is such a thing), and get the CC later?

In either scenario, what limitations on the sort of output you'd get from the receiver would you experience? Also, would either configuartion put any particular "strain," for lack of a better term, on any of the equipment?

Thanks.

I would get a center first...thats just me.

Your fronts could supply sufficient bass for the time being.

an LFE channel is separate from other channels, so no strain will be given, you will just lack dedicated extremely low frequency...but again your fronts will handle bass, you just tell the receiver there is no sub and the lfe is sent to the fronts.

Just me speaking here, but I'd say The B&W 685's, and HTM62 Center

$1,075 MSRP, you can probably get them to discount them, and get them for right around $1,000 after taxes.

Also, Your Sub is probably fine, I'd certainly upgrade everything else FIRST.

The sub isn't providing any of the "wow" crispy-tasty sounds that you'll notice instantly.... the Center, then the Fronts are for that, then the surrounds provide the background "whoa where did that come from" sounds.....
