The companies that make video games should really consider ALL customers when designing these games. I am in my 44 years of age and have supported this industry for 25 years now. I just got Burnout Paradise yesterday and gave it a whirl. Why must most new games be controled by the joy stick for direction? The D Pad should be an option on these games. This is the second driving game I have gotten in the last month that really has me considering if I want to continue buying games from an industry that does not care about a LARGE part of it's revenue stream. It would not be hard on these machines that have so much power to incorporate this option. My age bracket accounts for a large chunk of money for these games year in and out. It would not be hard to do. The best racing game of the last ten years, Gran Turismo, allows you operate the game in the manner that you so choose. So that leads me to believe that designers/companies could care less about this segment of the gaming public. If they continue to ignore us we will go away... I AM FED UP!!! I hope these companies read these forums and pay attention.

DPAD is not the best for driving game it's Digital. It's either All way left or not, not very appealing to make a smooth turn as with the Analog stick you can do just that... Same with Gaz/Brake, personnally i can't play if it's not Analog for G/B and Steering..

Seems to work just fine with Gran Turismo. Oh, and by the way when are we going to get more games that support 1080p? At these prices we should get more! And to the jerk that misses Pong, get a life and answer the question honestly and stop wasting people's time. If you were funny you would be getting paid for it.

Dude, welcome to 1997. If you haven't figured out how to play with the analog sticks after 11 years, maybe you should hang it up, or keep to "classic" video games. The only use the D-pad should have these days is to switch weapons or pop up a HUD.

Nah... companies that "could care less" at least demonstrate their ability to care a little... just not enough.
![]() To the OP, I hear ya. But video game developers would rather see gamers evolve with their games. I used to think the keyboard was the easiest way to play FPS games because I was weened on Wolf3D. But practice DOES make perfect. Keep at it, and don't forget your osteoporosis medicine, and you'll be fine! ![]() |

it would seem for a driving game that the analog stick would be better suited because you can trim the turn, just like when you drive for real. You can turn half-way or turn all the way or a quarter of a turn... the D-pad just doesn't do it as smoothly as the analog stick. For the D-pad, you have to press a little, little more, little more.. aww too much press... something like that.
But, to each his own... Gaming companies should put the option for users to be able to completely customize their controls. Why does X always have to be the accelerate button? What if I want square to be the accelerate button just for the hell of it? It's all about options. |

I actually prefer the D-pad for steering as well, but I only play racing games casualy. Many people I know who have more than a passing interest in racing games prefer the joystick.
I have been getting used to the joystick due to Motorstorm though, that game is pretty fun. It's also been getting me used to the R2 button as accelerate - it felt weird at first, but I like that my thumb doesn't hurt after hours of holding down the accelerate button. |

I think the SIXAXIS/DUALSHOCK 3 dpad might actually still be analog (pressure sensitive with 256° of motion) just like it was on PS2.
Can't remember any PS2 games that used the analog, maybe racing games but generally I only use it for snappy menu navigation. Best dpad out there! |
