Default Help. I'm very confused.

Hi. I am new to this forum and need help.

I know very little about DVD's or Blu-Ray. But from what I'm reading, it looks like Blu-Ray will be the format selected for HD.

I was just talked into buying a Panasonic DMR-ES25 DVD recorder. I use it somewhat for recording but mostly for watching DVD's from Netflix.

If Blu-Ray is adopted, does that mean DVD's, as we know them now, will no longer be produced?

And does it also mean that very shortly, my DVD recorder will eventually no longer be able to play any pre-recorded movies, tv shows, etc?

In other words, did I just waste money buying my DVD recorder since eventually every pre-recorded disk will be in Blu-Ray?

Thanks.

DVDs aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and developments in Blu-ray adoption will not cause your DVD recorder to cease functioning.

dvd will probably phase out not until like sometime in like 2012 but when it comes to hd Blu-Ray will end up winning. your purchase was not a waste but eventually you might need a Blu-Ray recorder but for all your movies that are on dvd recordable they will still be usuable after that just with Blu-ray you will get better quality is all for the recordables

VHS was still produced long after DVD became the home video standard, so do not worry about anything, like Joe Cain said. Your recorder will be able to play any DVD and record anything onto a DVD.

The last part of your last question, "...eventually every pre-recorded disk will be in Blu-ray?" will not happen for a number of years, so you will get great usage out of your current recorder.

Thanks everyone for your very quick responses. I feel better now knowing my two month old machine is not going to go the route of "betamax" within a year.

eventually a bluray recorder will be a good idea. Don't worry your purchase wasn't a waste. I mean you could still VHS players and recorders in major electronic stores.

Yes, Blu-ray is the format of choice for all your high definition needs! HD DVD is dead. Don't even look at it. It will burn your corneas.

So you rip Netflix DVDs?

That's what we're hoping. SD is SOOOOOOOO 1990's

Well, it will still play your existing libraries. IF Blu-ray subplants DVD (which won't happen for a long time), it wouldn't matter, by then you'd probably have a BD player or two which are backwards compatable to play DVD and even upconvert them. Don't be fooled though, upconversion is fake HD.

Not now, it's not a waste. Buy a BD player and you'll be able to enjoy BDs as well.
