Default how long do you think blu ray will last!!

just wanted to get some input from other fellow blu supporters here as to wether you think blu will be around for a long time to come or will something better replace it in the next 5-10 years? whats your thoughts and why?

the reason i am asking is i have people at work and friends that ask why i bought blu ray now if in 5 years something better will be out and take over blu ray and i say not way atleast for a while. blu is here to stay or the companies invested would not be investing into blu.

so anyways your thought and opinions on this would be cool, thanks

DVD has been around for more than 10 years, it is still going strong with no signs of slowing down soon.

dvd has actually slowed down a bit. Sales are slightly down. And falling.

As for the original question, I'd say about 10 years, more or less. It will most likely be compatible/equal to the next generation of televisions, 4k I believe. But most people are on their first hdtv's which could last ten or so years and only then will they think about a tv upgrade.

You gotta live for now, not tomorrow.

ya i know that, but will blu last 10 years or will something else takes its place. i mean 2 hd movie formats came out at once and i am sure something new will take its place someday. alot talk of downloads, but i cant picture that working well for the everyday home movie watcher?

You have to look at the staying power of other music and movie formats.

* Glass / vynil records lasted decades.
* Cassette is still around, albeit mostly for personal use.
* VHS last about 30 years
* Laserdisc about 20 years

DVD is only about 10 years old but the demise of it due to blu-ray is not the fault of DVD itself. It came on the cusp of of the new world of HDTV. The cross over transition killed it. If HDTV never came into being, DVD would be the big deal for a long time.

I was hearing about HDTV way back in 1985, and they DRAGGED their heals at least 15 years before it was back on the radar as a consumer product. Timing was just bad for DVD.

Blu-ray, or improved varients of it will be around a LONG time. Only thing I see being next is optical, or read only memory chip devices. Digital d/l will run along side of these technologies as well.

I believe Blu-ray will be around a long time. Most people can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on less than 46" screens. Current HDTV coupled with blu-ray 1080p content for home use is about as good as our eyes can resolve. Thus, home applications would see little to no gain from a resolution increase.

Blu-ray as a format will be around a long time barring any unforeseen breakthrough in storage technology. Dvd has been around for over a decade and will still be alive five years from now. It wouldn't surprise me if Blu-ray hangs around for the next 12-15 years. The real key will be how widespread HDTV adoption becomes.

Blu ray will be around for a fairly long time as a format, but it will never achieve the ubiquity of the dvd. Its good for right now, of course, which is what matters to me, but its not flawless, even for today.

I'm not wed by any means to any format, and will keep moving with technology appropriately.

I think Blu-ray will hold the field for about 15-20 years, like VHS did for analogue SD home video. After that downloads will take over, especially where it's necessary to break the 50GB limit on disc capacity.

Again with this crap God Damnit!

There will NOT be a 4K format because there will NOT be a 4K broadcasts!

People will ONLY change their TV's for a new broadcast standard and NOTHING else!

The NEXT broadcast standard is SHV (8K) and it's supposed to start airing in Japan in 2025 which means 2040 in North America and a decade for decent adoption until a "new format" is released. See you in 2050.

If DVD came out in the 60's it would have lasted for 40+ years because the resolution of the broadcasts have NOT changed between 1960-1998.

HDTV will be the BEST broadcast available between 1998-204X.

Enjoy your Blu-Ray's and STOP starting these idiotic threads every week.

I don't believe his original thread was entitled "4k", so perhaps you could lay off a bit?

Am I supposed to "magically" guess that someone changed the thread title?

Appologies to OP if he did'nt mean 4K...
