720 better for sports and action?
I’ve read in a number of articles that 720p is best for sports. Fox chose to broadcast in 720p because they want to be the football channel. I always wondered why 1280×720 at 60 FPS would be better than 1920 x 1080 at 60 FPS? In reading a recent thread on the Blu-ray forums about 1080i vs 1080p it came up again. I think for the first time I figured it out. They were never comparing 720p to 1080p they were comparing 720p to 1080i. It’s the interlacing that causes the problems with fast motion right? Broadcasting in 1080i to TVs which have many different display settings, could cause banding and other issues with the translation of the signal to make the image look less than stellar. Other than Blu-Ray via HDMI and PS3 trailers are is there any other 1080p video source right now? Will there be in the near future? So far I think all the download services, cable and satellites are either 720p or 1080i right? |

720p is better than 1080i for sports if it's referring to the method in which it is being filmed.
If it's filmed progressively, and according to the cameraman I spoke to at the F1 race in Montreal this year F1 is captured at 1080p50, then 1080i would be best because you can get 1080p by deinterlacing it. |

My question I suppose was is 720p only better because it's compaired to 1080i and the way it's filmed, not that there was some reason 720p was better than 1080p? Lets say someone filmed a game in 1080p and realeased it on BD, I assume that would be much better than 720p right? Not that most people would want to watch games that long after they happened. |

The F1 races were widescreen last year (switchover from 4:3 on the parade lap), but not HD. Right? ATSC allows for 1080p/30 (as well as 1080i/30 [ex 60] and 1080p/24). The preference would be 720p/60 over any of the 1080, wouldn't you say? But, is anyone doing 720p/60? Gary Last edited by dialog_gvf; 02-25-2008 at 09:05 PM. |

But, the best would be 720p/60. As drmpeg has mentioned, 1080p/60 is the next great level of broadcast on the way (cable/sat via AVC). Gary |

There is no ATSC 1080p transmission delivery format currently, 1080p is for storage and local playback only, not transmission.
