I've been looking around for a home theater system and had a few questions. Ive seen some people say that HDMI inputs sometimes only show picture and you need to use seperate inputs to recieve the sound. I just purchased a 56 Inch rear projection and i have HD cable and a PS3 I would like to hook it up too. If anyone could shed some light on why some recievers only show video and some do both I would appreciate it. I also have a decent sized apartment and if anyone could give some suggestions on a good surround sound system it would be great. Im pretty new to all this and dont know alot about any of this so far so if you could explain it it would help lol

a few things.......
What inputs does your T.V. have on it? For HDMI sound, the receiver has to accept the HDMI cable connection, and this is the best source for sound transfer, so you'd go HDMI from PS3, to receiver, then HDMI from Receiver to T.V. For right now.... with no surround sound, I believe you just run the HDMI from PS3 to T.V. and it'll carry your audio/video. if you don't have HDMI inputs on the t.v. then you're gonna have to run component and get 1080i but not 1080p (if you don't have HDMI inputs on the T.V. it's probably 1080i not p anyways, the difference is 1080 lines INTERLACED, or PROGRESSIVE..... there are stickies on the differences, check them out in "HDTV" section ) As far as surround sound choices for your apartment, first off, it's best to listen to things and determine what you like the best, but there are many suggestions out there, but before you get ahead of yourself, you gotta come up with a budget....... I don't want to recommend a $25,000 system when you're looking for a $500 home-theater-in-a-box deal...... There's a lot of great info out there, but what's most important is that you get something you'll enjoy. You mentioned a large apartment, so you'll probably want actual speakers, i.e. floor-standers and book-shelfs, and not little satellites...... if you've got the room for it, and aren't trying to keep a significant other happy, stay away from the satellite speakers, but if you must go that route, there are good ones out there too..... but like I said.... start with answering the questions about your current t.v. do you have any receiver or speakers now? even a pair of bookselfs that can be used for surrounds for the time being if you bought new fronts etc. how much music do you listen to, or do you want movie/HT only? |

Ok I finished reading. Im just looking for a HTIB (think thats right) around 500 to 700. I wont be listening to music at all just movies and games. I dont have a reciever now or any type of surround system. I dont even really need one with a DVD player since I have the PS3. I would just like one that I can hook my HD cable and PS3 to and have surround for both.

Check this suggestion.....
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=43362 or my suggestion would be to buy an Onkyo 605 receiver in SILVER (yeah they're cheaper in that color believe it or not) for $350 on Amazon.com, and then piece together five speakers to add to it, with a little sub, but the above suggestion will be an all-in-one up and running HTIB that will give you the bullets-wizzing-behind-your-head affects you're looking for when watching Blackhawk Down or 3:10 to yuma etc..... also, HDMI cables can be had at MONOPRICE.COM for $5 or so each....so don't buy them at the local store for $50 because they're the same cable!!!! good luck! I'm sure others will list other HTIB systems too.... there are quite a few of them out there. EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My honest suggestion....... sorry had to edit here..... but I'd honestly get the 605 in silver, and buy two front towers with the rest of your budget, and slowly add the rest of the speakers. but if You want it all at once, get a 5.1 system in a box. |
