Thumbs up No HD-DVD at my bestbuy

I went to BB today to pick up my psp and Final fantasycc, and what do i see? absolutely no hd-dvd's on the shelfs anymore. before it was 1 side with hd-dvd with one section, and the other side with blu-ray with 3 sections, now the dud section was compleaty empty. i was surprised to see that already happening, looks like that entire section is gonna be all blu now

Ok, an article on the subject from Video Business News:

Best Buy moves out HD DVD software
Space taken up by Blu-ray, standard DVD

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 3/26/2008
MARCH 26 | Best Buy has moved to return all unsold HD DVD software this week and has expanded its Blu-ray Disc merchandising at the same time.

A chain spokesman was not immediately available, but all HD DVD titles had disappeared from the in-line racks of at least one Los Angeles Best Buy outlet by Wednesday afternoon.

Just a couple of weeks ago, there was room for 120 HD DVD facings at that same store. However, the L.A. outlet was nearly wiped out of its HD DVD copies at that time. Many shelf slots were vacant, and any featured titles encompassed just one or two units.

Today, in the spots previously held by HD DVD, the L.A. Best Buy had moved in a mixture of Blu-ray titles and some standard DVD product. Blu-ray rack facings totaled about 295, marking about a 50% increase from the March 14 week.

On Tuesday, popular high-definition fan blog AVSForum.com was buzzing about a possible Best Buy memo informing employees that HD DVD titles would be returned nationwide today. The memo explained that Blu-ray and/or standard DVD new release titles should fill the shelves previously designated as HD DVD sections.

It’s unclear if Best Buy is returning titles to their respective studio distributors or sending them to an inventory close-out firm.

Best Buy still had HD DVD titles for sale on its Web site. However, most titles were listed as being in limited availability or completely sold out.

After Warner Bros. decided to exclusively back Blu-ray earlier this year, Best Buy quickly decided to favor the format over HD DVD. The chain said it would emphasize Blu-ray over HD DVD starting in March.

At that time, however, the chain said it would still offer HD DVD titles as long as it made sense according to customer demand. Last month’s death of the HD DVD format likely has accelerated a drop in that demand for HD DVD software.

I saw the memo that all HD DVDs were to be pulled starting this morning before opening. So I popped in after lunch and saw nothing but empty space. By this evening, there were BDs covering every shelf.

Default Best Buy getting rid of all HD DVD movies

When I got to work this morning checked employee news and saw this:

Updated: Mosaic Doing HD-DVD Sendback March 26

Mosaic will be in all stores before open on March 26 to pull and send back all HD-DVD titles.

Update: Best Buy will receive full credit for these sendbacks - so don't keep this product to try to sell it.

The representative will fill out the sendback paperwork and create a manifest for each individual tote. They'll also flex all Blu-ray inventory across the space where HD-DVD was featured. It's possible that stores may not have enough product to flex over all the old HD-DVD sections. In these cases, stores should put recent releases or titles that appeal to their customers in these areas. The Movies Team is working to increase the Blu-ray assortment to resolve this problem.

Stores with upcoming PI
If you have a PI close to the sendback timeframe, let Mosaic box up the HD-DVD product and remerchandise the area. They should stage the full sendback totes in the warehouse. Stores may want to verify the contents of each tote with the tote manifest that will be created and either create prescan sheets or count each tote on the night of inventory. A special sendback will post on the April 16 for these stores to ship their product back to the warehouse.

Signage
Mosaic will remove any header signs that list both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, as they are no longer valid signs in the store. Stores will be responsible to order additional Blu-ray sign rails to fill in the space left by the removed HD-DVD signs. Here are the signs that can be ordered:

811-0140636 - High Definition Movies for the ultimate...
811-0140829 - Play exclusively on Blu-ray Disc Players...
811-0140832 - High Definition Resolution...
811-0140833 - More titles available online...
Click below for a copy of Mosaic's instructions. Contact Ask the Bus with any questions.

A number of us believed that when the Format War was won, it would be over quickly. However, I don't believe we thought it would be this thoroughly over, this quickly. I wonder if Warner is going to continue to produce HD DVD disks through May if even BB won't carry them?

This is some pretty heavy stuff. Best Buy is dumping HD, other retails will probably follow suit throughout the year. This is surely a good year for Blu-Ray. Let's hope this expidites the process of getting all the other movies we want on BD that don't yet exist.

Yeah this is completely true. I went to Best Buy just yesterday to look for a new laptop (with Vista) and I was shocked to see the HD DVD section completely empty.

I'm guessing they're going to be increasing their Bluray selection by a great margin in the next few weeks.

This is a really good thing for Bluray. I'm really glad that the war is over so that there won't be any confusion about which HD format to choose.

Now everyone can buy an HDTV and move on to Bluray if they so choose without any hesistation or doubts.

Good. The BB that's about to open by me will never have to taste the toxic poison of an HD-DVD on its shelves.
