When I got my new TV and PS3 I made this rule for myself that I wouldn't duplicate DVDs with Blu-Rays. Well after thinking about it for a while I realized that I won't be able to stick with that. I mean, if/when the original Star Wars series comes out on BD I'll be the first in line - rules be damned.
So, what movies do you think are worth buying again on Blu-Ray? I've listed a few of my faves. Hopefully this hasn't already been posted. I tried a bunch of searches and didn't see anything. Star Wars (4 - 6) Pulp Fiction Indiana Jones trilogy |

quite a few... but then again, I have quite a few standard DVDs....
I go on a release by release basis.... read about the AQ/PQ, and if it gets iffy reviews, I may pass.... (waiting on the Terminator movies to be re-done for instance) I waited on 5th Element, then they re-did it, and now I'm getting it..... Some will say "everything" but apparently they think the House of Flying Daggers Blu is a big upgrade..... but If I were you, I wouldn't waste your money! (to this day the only blu-ray I regret buying, and I got it for $8!!!) |

I have over 400 Sdvds so I will probably on replace the ones I think I will get the most Benefit out of.
Already replaced POTC:COTBP because it was one of my five freebies, I will likely replace my POTC 2. Star Wars (all of them) Indy Harry Potter Series Anything that is really effects laden that I think will look much better I will upgrade, which is likely going to be very few. I will just not buy anymore SDVDS instead opting BLu only. |

For me it all depends on the movie... for example, I have a Toshi player that upconverts my regular DVDs amazingly; that being said, I just bought AvP (ok, so it was included in the Blu-ray 2 pack) even though I have it on DVD, Cars even though I have it on DVD, Independence Day even though I have it on DVD, and Twister even though I have it on DVD. I won't buy STUPID (in my humble opinion) movies that are Re-released on Blu though just for the sake of having them.... like Crimson Tide, The Fugitive, The 6th Day, and so forth; it would have to be a movie that 1) the Wife or I love and 2) We would watch multiple times. I guess what I'm getting at is that for me it goes on a movie-by-movie basis. It also depends on how many new Blu releases come out that week too... if it's a weak release date (like this week was...) then I'll prolly pick up some library flicks (which is what I did: Cars & Independence Day)... just my $.02

+1. Shortly before I purchased my BD player, I owned nearly 300 DVDs. I actually liquidated nearly half of my DVD collection in order to purchase my BD player. I sold off almost all of the DVDs which I would rarely if ever watch again. I also sold off ALL of the DVDs I owned which were available on Blu-Ray. Obviously I did this because I inteded to replace them.
Now I can say after owning a Blu-Ray player and now 61 Blu-Rays (3 of which are in the mail on their way to my house), and I am glad that I did got rid of all those DVDs. If one of the DVDs that I sold and loved was available on BD, I have already purchased mad it a part of my BLU-RAY collection. I ca say in all honesty that I would do it again if faced with the decision. BD is immensely better than SD-DVD and I have NO regrets. With the exception of The Mist and Cloverfield (and possibly some "must haves" in the future which may not be released on Blu-Ray) I will not be purchasing DVD again. I still have several DVDs that I will be getting rid of in or to replace them with the BD. For example V for Vendetta, Signs, Gangs of New York, and so forth as they are released on BD. Whew!! This sure is an expensive hobby. |

I don't race out to get a new BD until I at least read a review or two. So, for me to replace a DVD that I probably paid full price for at the time because I just "had" to have it, it must be a stellar transfer/ audio review.

I have been terrible about this. I started out selling and rebuying only a few favorites, and I have sold off some of the stuff that isn't out on Blu yet, but is very likely in the future.
But, the more and more I have gotten into Blu the more DVDs I have been selling off. I will most likely get to the point where I only have Blus and a few DVDs that will likely never get re-released on Blu. And I probably won't replace the HBO TV stuff I have, their Blu-Ray counterparts will likely be too pricey for me. |

With the DVDs that I have replaced with blu-rays, I'm now just boxing them up (don't plan to sell them). I sold/gave away a big chunk of my DVD collection over the last couple of years but I've regretted it ever since. So, I've decided to hold on to various things I collect even when I don't think I want them anymore. At least for a few years, to make sure I don't change my mind or didn't get rid of stuff b/c a knee-jerk reaction to something. |

I'm mostly only replacing the top 20 - 30 in my wifes and I favorite movie list. I really don't buy DVD's anymore, anything new comes on blu. The few DVD's I will buy will be animation movies or series that are not on blu - or kid's movies I think we'll take on the road in a portable dvd player.
I have a box of DVD's I'd like to get rid of, but most I'll keep, like you owa, I don't want to sell a bunch and then regret it later on. Some of my favorite older movies like 12 angry men, Invasion of the body snatchers, Alfred Hitchcock collection, will always be DVD, don't see any reason to replace. However, movies I've recently seen like Legend, Beowulf, etc that are good will be blus. |

All of my dvds will be replaced with Blu-ray. I dont have many dvds right now. Just CSI series(CSI:, CSI: NY, CSI: Miami), Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings on dvd. That all I have right now. Most movies are on Blu-ray.
I give up near all of my dvd last year to open door for Blu-ray into my colleciton. Tough break for me to wait on Star Trek, James Bond series to come out on Blu-ray because I give them away last year. No new movies will come out on DVD. Only CSI: series will come out on dvd as until it start out on Blu-ray too. |

the last sd dvd i bought was American Gangster,(I didnt want to wait for the bd),but it will be the last sd i ever buy! I will replace all sd with blu, when they are released. i really prefer bd's pq in comparison to upscaled sd's. so its all out, similar to when dvd replaced my vhs collection!

I kept my music std dvd's, but traded nearly 600 regular dvds at hastings, got about 1400 instore credit, then my girlfriend (who works at hastings) used her discount and we cleaned out the store, it was fun! If you know somebody who works at a store like that, trade em in and cashout with blus

It got to the point where they just had mountains of stuff piled everywhere unprocessed . I kept thinking that evenually they would put a stop to it, because we were obviously taking advantage of the policy, but they never did. Just bad management I guess, and not surprisingly that store went out of business not long after that. I don't know exactly what role that may have played in the matter, but it couldn't have helped. |
