Default Kubrick on Blu-ray - worth double dipping?

I've got the recent Kubrick Collection on SD DVD. For those that have it on Blu-Ray and have seen both versions side by side. Is there enough of a difference between the Blu-Ray and SD to justify duplicating the collection on BD?

The only feedback I've gotten is that Full Metal Jacket suffered visually in both BD releases.

Thanks!

The second release of Full Metal Jacket is very good. I own all of the movies in SD and in Blu-ray and there is an apparent difference in the PQ of every title. I have no regrets in upgrading those titles.

2001 looks fantastic, The Shining is also great. Both are definitely substantial upgrades over the DVD editions.

Question Eyes Wide Shut (Unrated)

Any one having difficulty playing "Eyes Wide Shut"? I just bought a Sony BDP-S300 w/Firmware Version 3.8) along with three Kubrick flicks (Shining, 2001 and EWS). Shining and 2001 load and play great. EWS will not load and the dreaded "Can't Play Disc" message appears. Spent several hours on the phone with SONY support (player resets, power downs, etc). Nothing works. They told me to send the player back to PA for repair. Programmed Parental Controls per service manual...still nothing. Frustrating.

I have the same player and have never had a problem with any Kubrick movies or any other movie for that matter.
For the record, I bought the same Kubrick set on DVD recently and returned them so i could upgrade to the BD. Worth every penny. 2001 is an especially fantastic transfer. Man that movie looks amazing.

I sold my SD DVD Collection as soon as I pre-ordered the now available ones (along with the new release of Full Metal Jacket) and do not regret upgrading at all! So far I only got around to watch 2001, FMJ and The Shining, and all of them are a definite improvement over the SD versions. I hope they'll bring out more movies soon. The only downside is that I cannot see Warner releasing the documentary on BD any time soon.

I took the EWS disc to Best Buy and had them drop it into a player, the disc loaded right up. Looks like I'll be shipping the player back to Sony's repair facility in PA. Totally Bites!

I'm no expert but I have the reissue and it looks fantastic. If you're a fan go for it.

THE SHINING is AMAZING in Blu Ray! For a transfer of a movie from 1980 you can't really beat this.
EYES WIDE SHUT came across as a bit of a dissapointment on Blu Ray. To be completely honest, there really isn't much of a difference if the quality compared to the new DVD version. I think this movie must have naturally been a bit grainy in some places. Truth be told, the Blu Ray does come across as being a tad bit sharper in some places... but in others, there just isn't much of a difference at all.

yep, though after ejecting it out of the player, I sometimes get the "Can't Play Disc" message on other discs that played previously. I then open and close the player tray a few times and the other discs do play. Just hate to send the player back to PA if there is some way to resolve this via reprogrammingany of the settings .

I own A Clockwork Orange 2 Disc Special Edition on DVD, but I still bought it on Blu-ray for an extra $30. A Clockwork Orange is so fantastic that I'm willing to spend extra money on it. The only film that I'd recommend you buy on BD is A Clockwork Orange, and if you like that, consider buying 2001. I'd probably stop there, as most of his other films just aren't really worth it, although I respect all his films and his work.

2001, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and Full Metal Jacket (remastered) are NIGHT AND DAY better than the SD versions!

2001 is REFERENCE, and the others look like they were filmed within the past few years..... amazing, REALLY amazing. I'm not so impressed with what Blu-Ray does for CGI, etc... and new action movies.... but when I see titles like these, and Blade-Runner, and Close Encounters.... MAN... that's something special!!!!!

Almost every Kubrick title on BD it's identical in terms of aspect ratio and supplements than the new special editions on DVD.

The difference of course is better pq and audio on BD. So it's up to you to upgrade or not.

The only exception is "Full Metal Jacket". FMJ DVD is presented only in FS Open Matte and practically barebones. Here upgrading to BD (Deluxe Edition) is a no brainer.

Hope that helps.

Same player...no problem with Eyes Wide.

To the OP, Eyes Wide Shut is the only one I've doubled so far and it was well worth it.

It is widescreen though and I'm pretty sure that Kubrick originally shot it in 4:3 so you might want to keep the oriiginal DvD in a sleeve with your new Blu Ray.

Enjoy

Does this means it has been cropped to fit 1.78:1 or 1.85:1. Is this correct?

2001 is a very good transfer and quality is excellent for its age. My only concern is the slight edge enhancement that it suffers. They could have done it without EE and also perhaps with slightly reduced DNR.

He shot EWS in FS Open Matte because he hated to see his films like 2001 and Spartacus being mutilated to fit Standard TV sets. You know Black Bar Haters exists long before 16x9 sets were invented.

But Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket and The Shinning (all of them shot on Open Matte), were matted to 1.85:1 for their theatrical run with the consent of Kubrick.

The Full Screen Open Matte versions were done by Kubrick just to avoid the chopping and cropping of his films when shown on TV.

Therefore you can't go wrong either if you watch it on FS Open Matte or Flat Widescren 1.85:1. I personally prefer the latter.
