Default Double Dipping?

Say Blu-ray wins the format war and someday competes with DVD, does anyone have any doubt that we will see double dipping on the movies already released?

I would think that anything with poor PQ and AQ would be re-released in the future. Like any ports from HD-DVD that didn't maximize the use of a BD-50, or anything that was squeezed onto a BD-25.

If Blu-ray does take over, all the techs encoding the movies would be a lot more in tune with getting the best they can out of each movie, and not to mention the new features possible with 1.1 and 2.0 that aren't on any current release.

This is why I didn't rush out and buy all the Paramount releases with HD-DVD ports and regular Dolby 5.1... Well I did but cancelled the order the same day.

Anyone else holding off buying subpar encodes because of this?

Sortof yes... I bought Stargate which is great in the daytime scenes and bad in the dark scenes, but it was really cheap hehe. Well ok not really REALLY cheap but way cheaper than all my other BDs

I just sort of expect it...it's just one of the extra prices we pay as early adopters.

One of the good things is there's less of a technical reason for double dipping with the ability to encode multiple versions of a film on the same disc.

Odds are we'll see added value in all double dips. Just like how DVD double dipped with directors editions and threw in deleted scenes as a bonus for buying the DVD over the vhs, I am expecting we'll see multiple versions on the same disc as being the boost for blu-ray over DVD with IME and eventually PiP down the road being the reason for double dipping.

As would I. That seemless branching stuff would be nice on this title too.

This was one of the first BD I bought(along with the original Fifth Element release) and I was disapointed to find out that the walmart website at the time listed the T2 BD as having BOTH versions of the film. Apparently somebody put the "Ultimate"DVD descrition up for the BD destription too. It wasn't until after I was watching the movie that I realize my mistake...I should have double checked the back. But oh well, lesson learned.

I'd buy the new one too.

it is expected, judging from watching the re-releases of DVDs.

they always find a reason. Haven't some already started? Hasn't Warner anounced a new release on an HD DVD (Troy, I think)?

Default Yes

I would hope that eventually all films released on BD will be new transfers from original film negatives and/or good quality release prints, and in the case with classics and older films, picture and sound restoration as well.

In the case with certain classics, extra features including out-takes (not just alternate takes) would be important. In theatrical films, certain musical and dance sequences are edited heavily to fit the forward dramatic development of the story. However, when those musicians and dancers are great, you are missing something of their art. A classic example is Carmen Amaya, from "Maria de la O" to "Los Tarantos", mush of her dance was edited out (by necessity) but all those takes would be very valuable today.
"Tabor Uhodit v Nebo" is another example of lost great performances via editing.

So yes, I hold out much hope for BD. It would greatly benefit film and art history.

Double dipping is inevitable. Just look at some of the first titles released on Blu-ray for example and tell me that there is no room for improvement. Just for that reason alone some of them will be re-released. Not to mention special versions, director's cuts, more behind the scene footage, etc.

The entire industry is based around you buying and rebuying

I just wish people would stop *****ing about it. Accept that there may be a better version down the road when you buy anything

I would re-phrase this to :

"HOPE that there will be a better version down the road..."
