Default Rules for Double-Dipping

Upon hearing news of the upcoming extended version of Transformers on Blu Ray I started thinking about studios double dipping and when it is acceptable and when it is not. I cam up with some rules for double dipping.

In the case of Transformers, I understand that the studio would want to maximize profit on the release of the sequel this summer. If this is the case, they really should not have released Transformers at all on blu until this summer. I mean, they just released the theatrical cut in September.

Rule #1: There should be at least a two year period between the initial release and the double dip extended/directors cut/special/super edition. I would feel a lot better about purchasing the extended cut of Transformers if i bought the first release two years prior.

For Lord of the Rings, if they do not release the extended cuts of the movies for the 2009 release, then we can all pretty much assume that they will double dip and release them either along side the Hobbit's theatrical release or DVD/Blu Ray release. In this case a lot of us will either not buy the theatrical cuts or begrudgingly buy them and either hesitate to buy the extended cuts or not buy them at all.

Rule #2: If you already double dipped on the DVD side a couple years ago. You aren't allowed to do the same thing on blu ray. What you can do, however, is release the entire trilogy as a box set (much like the matrix) then release them individually later on for the hold outs who didn't want to buy the whole thing at once.

SPECIAL STAR WARS EXCEPTION RULE!

Release all 27 cuts of the movie on one collection and charge under $100 for the whole set, I am so sick of buying that damn trilogy and Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox has crossed the multiple release limit
