I am sorry if there is another topic about this, but I couldnt find one. So can the 40Gb PS3 play PS2 or PS1 games??? I heard that they made this possible with a firmware update but I wasnt sure...

The 40GB PS3 will play PS1 Games, but won't play PS2 games with the current firmware 2.35. That's not to say that this won't change in the future. I have the 40GB version and can play the Q-bert PS1 game on it.

Well you can prove him half wrong. Like Bmohr1 said, they will only play PS1 games.

Well I found a PS2 game (Fifa 2003 I think it was...) and when I got home I tried it out on my 40gb PS3.

Did it work? No.

I would presume you can play PS1 games, otherwise why would they allow you to download certain titles from the PS3 Store?

This is a well known topic and issue. If you use the search tool, you will probably see something on it.
The PS3 40GB model can not play PS2 games, but it will play PSone games. The 60 and 80 GB models both play PS2 and PSone games.
There are plans (and rumors) to provide a software emulator for the 40GB PS3 to run PS2 games. Sony never intended to not provide PS2 playback, but with the format war and console war and price wars... they felt they had to release a cheaper console before the software was ready. So they released it without the PS2 playback but now they are trying to get it out so they can sell PS2 games in their online store as well as provide support for the best selling console format in history.

It will work in time, but you will probably have to wait till the Fall at the earliest.
