Default PS3 backward compatible with ps2 games?

Does anyone know if by any chance in a future could be a firmware that make the PS3 80GB compatible with ps2 games??????

I know Sony wanted people to help develop software that resolved the Backward compatibility issues but I haven't heard anything else on it.

If your PS3 currently doesn't play PS2 games, then it never will. At least, I wouldn't hold your breath as Sony has specifically stated that it won't focus on this aspect of the PS3 anymore.

Which ruins the whole point of taking off the backwards compatibilty because they would be unplayable. It will be like putting a Wii game inside the PS3.

But if its in the same encoding then it will be same result as having the disc. Like for instance the PS1 games used on the PSN are the same exact encoding as the original PS1 release. So in order for PS2 games to be on the PSN Store they would need to be re-encoded for use on the PS3.

Exactly! Its not that they CAN'T, it just that they will do whatever is the most profitable for them.

just to clarify..i'm not saying this will happen! just speculation

but yea mike..i think they'd have to re-encode to even get it to work, so its not even a money thing. but it'd work out nicely lol

I too have the two year old flavour of the PS/3 that plays PS/2 games. While useful at the time, I rarely see my kids play any PS/2 games on it any more. We also still have a PS/2 hooked up in our basement.

So I think Sony was right in dropping PS/2 compatibility to achieve a lower price point.

I agree, although one of the reasons I bought my 60GB was because of the b/c, I have yet to play any PS2 game on it after almost 2yrs.

I think if you are buying a PS3 then you'll mainly use it because of the awesome PS3 games, blu ray functionality and media server capabilities.

I still play PS2 games on my PS3 all the time. Currently I'm playing persona 4 which is a fairly new game... I still have my ps2 but it doesn't upconvert so it looks horrible on any HDTV. Even though PS2 games are probably played less, I think even 10% of playtime would justify the need to at least implement software compatibility. We all know everyone is going to be replaying GOW 1 & 2 soon too.

My 80 GB model is backward compatible, but from what I understand it was the last variation of the console that was ever available with this feature. It seems this a feature Sony has dropped altogether from the PS3 console.
