the differences between the 2 are not great when you compare apples to apples. sony xbr (lcd) line vs panny (plasma) are going to be very close, the panny may have better blacks but i have a 52 xbr4 and my buddy has a 50 panny 80pz800u and when i look at one to the other it would not sway me to buy one over the other because there is not much of a difference. i have delt with image retention on my philips plasma so i stayed away from plasmas and got the xbr to use in my living room with my ps3,360 and my GF's wii. if i had to do it all again i would buy a lcd again because no matter how much people say burn in is a myth, its your money you are out when it happens to you (even lcds burn in, it happens to our older hospital displays all the time and we replace them because it gets hard to read what is really being displayed).

hands down the best television on the market is the LNxxA750 (40, 46 and 52"s). I've always owned sony tvs but when I recently upgraded I went with the 750 Samsung. Plasmas are a dying technology. Pioneer has stopped manufacturing them, and they were the leading manufacturer in plasma. Panasonic who makes many of the affordable consumer plasmas are also starting to shift towards bigger lcds. Many will argue this on the forums but the truth is plasma is going to vanish from major electronic stores within the next two years.
You can hang any thin panel television with the right mount. Mounts are usually marked with the sizes you can use with them. Consider looking on amazon for mounts because retailer mark ups on these items are obscene. But check out the Samsung 650 and 750 series. Both are breath-taking. I've seen the Sony W and Z series television for 2008. While they are impressive they are not the quality of Samsung. *Note The Z series Bravia LCD is Sony's high end television for 2008. Hopefully this helps. The best thing you can do is go to your local stores and see for your self. This is just my two cents in a pocket full of change. ![]() |

The next evolutionary step is OLED (high end) and Laser TV (better price), correct? I'm hoping for an LDLP when they become available in retail stores and drop in price. Does anyone know if they will drop in price comparable to DLP, and will they actually look comparable to LCD, as advertised?
I'm thinking of getting an LCD 46' or 47' in the meantime. ![]() |

plasma is better for picture quality hands down. the colors are much richer and more lifelike. LCD's are more durable screens (which means they cant burn in very easily) and are a little brighter so are better in brighter viewing areas. OLED will replace both as it is thinner, lighter, has far better PQ, and will eventually be cheaper to manufacture. my 2 cents, buy a panny plasma if you want good value for your buck. if you go LCD, get and XBR from sony

the best lcd on the market is the sony xbr line and thesamsung 81 series. anyone who says samsung is better then sony or visa versa is just being biased because they own "the better" one. you can not go wrony with a xbr or high line samsung and on the plasma side panny pz800u is a good choice and if you have the money you can step up into the pioneer level. go to bestbuy and go into the magnolia area. the tvs there are going to be the "high line". any size flat panel tv can be wall mounted. |

Do you like glare on your TV? If so, plasma.
If not, LCD. Do want the best picture and color? If so, plasma. Do you want to game? LCD. Do you watch alot of fast moving sports? If so, plasma. You want the best for $2000? In that price range I can calibrate a LCD and make it look like a Plasma. Oh and to the poster about life, Plasma and LCD are equal, and there is almost no burn in on a plasma unless it shows the same static image for 48hrs, plus. Edit: These are basic ?'s I ask people at best buy when they buy one, the light on the TV determines what most people buy. |

anyone who recomends oled is on the same level as me recomending a new car that will get 70 miles to the gallon. oled is not going to be around for a few years and the only choice right now is a 11 inch sony in the $2ks. by the time oled come out mainstream there will most likely be another newer technology in the making.

Sony or Samsung.
Do you watch alot of fast sports? If so, 120Hz. (soccer, football, only). If not, 5ms will be enough. (I have 5ms and barely get any blur, only on soccer with the people really small on basic cable, cant notice anything on HD) If I was buying a TV, I would go for the Samsung LN46A650 or LN46A750. (You can go to a 40" if that is too much.) I'm a big fan of Samsung, same quality as Sony, but for a lower price point. Plus at Best Buy this week 3yrs No interest on Samsung's. |
