Cool Wireless WiFi Hotspots and your PSP.

PSP Owners,

How do you get your PSP to connect to WiFi at various Hotspots? For instance, I don't have a T-mobile WiFi account, so that option in the connections menu is not an option for me. However, I do have AT&T Yahoo! DSL at home, which means I can get free AT&T WiFi where it's available.

Starbucks and McDonalds supports AT&T WiFi. In fact, I can get on those networks with no problem at all using my laptop. However, the PSP can't connect. The PSP, when I scan, will find the SSID (attwifi), but when I select it and move to the right to continue setting it up, I get options like WEP, etc. I have no idea what to choose or how to continue setting it up and I am never able to get something going.

Any help would be appreciated.

WEP is password encripted. it requires a password in order to use that connection. you need to find a hotspot with no security or have the password. when scanning it will say "security-none". if it says any thing else under security it requires a password.

Actually, I just read McDonalds' web site and it states that "Wayport does not enable WEP (Wired Equivalency Protection) on any of the wireless equipment used in their networks. Therefore, no special keys are required to use Wayport's wireless Internet access."

With my laptop, I am able to connect to the network with no problem. Once connected, the first time I open my browser, I have to put in my AT&T credentials. It is not until then, that I can visit another web site.

However, with the PSP, I can't even get it to connect to their network.

I suspect that the laptop is doing some things automatically that has to be done manually with the PSP. It's just that I'm missing some of those manual settings and I don't know what the enter in the PSP.

ok, i kinda skimmed over your post and missed this. after you select the proper SSID and you scroll to the right(when the option comes up for security) just select none. If you select anything other than none(ex.WEP) and there is actually no security it wont work. so when you scan and it says none for security, select none. keep everything else at automatic

OK, I went to Micky D's for lunch and tried some things out. Here's what I learned:
  • First, I scanned for the WiFi and found the attwifi SSID.
  • After selecting attwifi, instead of trying to do automatic, I did manual.
  • Within manual, I pretty much left everything to automatic. The last screen there, however, gives the option to display a browser upon connecting. So, I selected that option.
  • After I saved my settings for setting up the type of connection, I attempted to open a browser and, guess what? It still didn't work. BUT, at least this time I was getting a wayport (the actual wifi provider) error screen. To me, that meant that I was getting a connection, but the wayport login site is NOT compatible with the PSP's browser ( imagine that.) The good news was that there was a tech support phone number on the error page.
  • I called the number and I didn't tell them I was using a PSP at first just to see if we'd eventually get to that topic through our troubleshooting. I gave him the error message and error ID just to see if he would look up the error ID in his system. I always try to get a CSR to tell ME what the problem is and NOT the other way around. If a CSR is made to feel like I already know what the problem is and I'm just calling to complain, they are less likely to help.
  • Anyway, he eventually asked me if I was using a laptop and I told him that it was the Playstation Portable and he said, "Oh yeah! We have a lot of people calling about that and we recognize that the login screen doesn't come up. What I can do is log you in manually from our end and then you can be online.
  • I gave him my login credentials and he said "try it." Sure enough, it worked like a champ.
  • After asking more questions, I learned that they are working on a fix so PSP's can log in AND if I want to use the PSP in the future at their hotspots, is give them a call and request that they log my in over the phone.
So, now I know what to do if I want to use the PSP at hotspots. The bummer is that I have to call wayport every time I want to log in, but that's a minor issue.

Now, if I could only get my remote play working again with the PS3. It was working just fine several months ago, and it still works great when I access the PS3 at home from home, but not via the internet.

good work! it must be just for hot-spots where you need credentials though. any ol' regular hot-spot should work fine without all the phone hassle. for example, i use wal-mart's all the time. also when i go to my cousin's house, somebody in the apt. complex has an un-encripted access point and i just use their's

P.S. i cant get my remote play to work either.

It was working so good too. I could get it to work through the internet, through the home WiFi and through directly connecting (wirelessly) to the PS3. Now, I can only get it to work directly to the PS3 (wirelessly), but that doesn't do me any good when I'm not at home.
