i wonder if for some reason hd-dvd does fail, do you think that a firmware update for blu-ray players could read hd-dvd . blu-ray players alreay play dvds right, so they both use the red laser. maybe the blu-ray camp alreay thought of this so ethier way <blu-ray dies or hd-dvd dies > neither consumer loses this way.< well i guess hd-dvd players would > any thoughts?

Absolutely NOT possible. Firmware can not change the lens, which is what is required. The two possibilities are two blue lasers with different lenses, or swapping the lens's over one blue laser, which I think is what LG do. This applies if going from Blu-ray to HD-DVD or vi ca verse. With the exception of the LG what you have will stay that way. Firmware is software, this is a physical change required. Nice thought though! Any easy way of looking at it Blu-ray is long sighted, HD-DVD is short sighted.

As it stands, HD-DVD movies cannot be played now or in the future via firmware updates however the movies would probably come out anyway again in a blu-ray format.
As we all know, it seems like HD-DVD consumers are buying into a dying format anyhow and it would be a shame to see all their hard earned cash be fizzled away (my compassionate side here talking) BUT they may be able to use the LG hybrid player but that would mean forking out for another expensive player, which might not seem as an appealing option for some, i guess if their movie collection is quite small, they should just carry on with blu-ray and play the movies they got on their HD-DVD player. Not much hope for HD-DVD i guess, but was there any really or just a false sense of hope |

I went from caring to not, real quickly. After listening to the hddvd fans continually blast the blu format, Im happy they are getting screwed (my evil side speaking). I only wish I had the time to find their posts to throw it back at them. |

![]() Isn't HD DVD copying the blue laser idea the reason Blu-rays are called blu, instead of blue, now? Heh, someone should write a book! The Lasers of Silicon Valley... or something.. |

Now THAT is interesting. I have never heard that before. Maybe if they went with the red laser instead, their player would function properly more than 3% of the time... but that wouldn't explain why Blu-Ray works 99.999999% of the time (I am not saying it works right 100% because i have had a movie freeze once and then The Descent didn't work, but that doesn't compare to not being able to finish a film because the audio wont match and the disc wont quit fast forwarding/freezing no matter what I do...)
