Default recommend a receiver upgrade

I have an older (4-5 years, VR-800 something?) Kenwood receiver that I'd like to update in the next few months. It does not have HDMI and that is a main feature I'm looking for. I like Panasonic, Kenwood, Pioneer... but am open to other suggestion. Also I'm not looking for a powerhouse or high end, just a simple upgrade for playing Ps3 games and watching TV/Movies. Thanks in advance.

Kenwood doesn't even make home theater receivers anymore

Since you are not looking for a powerhouse, I think an Onkyo 605 would do you very well. They can be found very cheap now that the 606 is out.

Even the 606 is fairly cheap I picked mine up on Amazon for 340.00 a couple weeks back and it is great. My PS3 sounds awesome just watched Transformers and I had to turn down the bass before my windows broke.
