Default Jaden Smith is the New "Karate Kid"

Yes, another remake now officially on deck...

Quote:
- "Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith.

The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China.

The younger Smith, who next stars in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," is a martial arts practitioner.

Columbia presidents Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach said they had been trying to find a way to bring back the series, which began with three films that featured Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. A subsequent film launched the career of Hilary Swank."

I loved the first three. The Next Karate Kid was awful. Sounds like this one will be awful as well.

All I know is that no one, and I mean no one, can replace the late, great Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi!

Enough said.

Are they so short on original new ideas that they must systematically tap on all that has already been done ?

How did they have a 22 year old play the role of a 14 or 15 year old?

What you didn't figure that out a couple years ago? Anything that was done before whether it be a book, a movie, a comic book, or a story must be done because they're easier to create with an already implemented story line, which means more movies out and more money. Basically it's all about getting the most money. We have to support the hollywood's taste.

Pretty much if it's done well I kind of bypass it in my mind that it is alright. Makes me pay attention to the actors more then ever, I'll tell you that.

Very true. I hate that they're doing this. The originals were great and still are, leave it at that.

I've heard rumors about this for a while but was hoping no one would greenlight it. Damn.

The other rumor I heard about this was that Will wanted to play Pat's role.

Hollywood Sucks. I think that Rikki Lake would make a great karate kid.

This is extremely unpleasant to hear. I'm sure the rest of the casting in iconic roles for this film will be equally horrendous.

This is a remake not another addition to the original 3, correct. I've only seen the first one and I thought it was pretty cool.

Maybe they will call it MMA kid, he will get eye gouged but come out victorious since his master taught him how to fight with his eyes closed.

That would be the only positive news coming from this remake.
