Default HDTV Upgrade: Do it now or wait?

My original plan was to upgrade my screen early next year using my tax refund, 2 months disposable income, and if I get it, my bonus. The model I want is the Pioneer 115FD; 60-inch kick-ass plasma screen as we all know.

Recent news raises concern for me: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=72062
If it's true that CE prices are going to rise significantly, that could naturally include this here TV. I found it for $4,557 online, currently looking for final price details (taxes, shipping, etc.). But if this news is true, that price won't last.

Would I wiser to get it now before the deal's off, or to wait till February/March per the original plan?

if you are really only interested in buying that model, i think you should consider getting it now - but if you have you eyes on any other models especially by other manufacturers, i'd wait. there are a lot of very high quality products out there and i would be very surprised to see price increases do well in our economy right now. the limited consumer activity we will see in 2009 will be very price conscious and if companies are going to raise prices 20-50% - they're kdding themselves if they think they won't sell less product

just about everyone who buys a big ticket item (car, tv, etc) has a price point that carries more weight than the actual product/brand/maker they choose

with that in mind, if you think you can live with 1-2 other brands/makes i woudl wait until the post holiday sales that typically go on - you can see as much as 50% roll backs on stuff that week after xmas - maybe not on this brand but the week after xmas is one of the best deal hunting periods for big ticket items

and of course, in general terms, electronics prices almost always fall steadily over time as newer/better models are introduced - patience alone almost always means you save money

my 2 cents

I think this XMAS is going to be brutal..
with the economy in the tank
it should be a buyers market
and all prices come down arround CES
with the introduction on the new models

If it were me and I already had a decent tv to watch things on... I'd put all of that cash into savings (assuming all of my credit card debt was already paid off)

When the market crashed in '29, it was about a year before the general public really started feeling the pinch. Black Tuesday.... the crash that is considered to be the start of the Great Depression, the market dropped 23%. We've dropped almost 48% in the past two months. Who knows if we will really have another depression or not..... but it will undoubtedly be a very ugly recession throughout 2009. I'd feel better having as much cash as I could socked away.

Then if everything does work out OK...... when this all blows over all that savings will be really fun to spend.

Thanks for all the wisdom. I'm a probly wait 'till next year to re-assess this, despite risks of price hikes. My next topic of concern is here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=72197
