Default HD DVD Player Restrospective Question ( No HD Hate comments, goes w/o saying...)

Before I had a PS3 and before the war was over, I got a cheap Toshiba
hd-a2 which has since broke but i had the store warranty and made out.

what im wondering is, would it have been possiple to ever ad 1080p to the now defunct 720p/1080i player via a frimware update....?

I think some of them, were updated recently to add 1080p. I don't know which models and I don't care to Google Search it.

i highly doubt it was capable. this was toshibas biggest hd dvd player sales wise and of course not being 1080p was something people really nagged on it for, so if it was at all possible, im sure toshiba would have upgraded it.

No, not the HD-A2. That was the whole point of that model - it was a budget version that didn't support 1080p and never will.

Yeah, my HD-A3 can't do it either. It is one of the most frustrating piece of **** I've ever owned..

from my understanding Toshiba experemented with trying to get 1080P on the 1080i models (or atleast some of them) but it's wasn't perfect, then again I got this from rumors floating around during the format war when rumors were floating around about TL51 and everything else... if your using the latest firmware and it doesn't give you the option, then I think it's a safe bet that firmware never existed.

I don't believe the physical chip is capable of the decoding, so 1080i is the best you'll ever get out of it.

You can't upgrade an A2 to 1080p. I bought one when they were $79, then sold it for the same amount to get a top of the line XA2 which has been flawless. I use it to play HD material not yet available on blu-ray and upconvert standard DVD's with the Silicon Optix HQV processor. Despite the fanatical diatribes you read on this site, they were good machines - the XA2 is still operationally superior to my Sony BDP-S1 ($1000) and BDP-S300.
