Default Consumers, Films Deserve Higher Encodes

I am doing this thread because it seems most companies are getting laxed or are just staying that way when producing Blu-Rays. The films may look great on Blu as some have been released but can they look better? At the least they should be releasing their films with the best storage space possible.

I listed some examples below with the information from the DVDbeaver.com site. I didn’t want single out WB’s so much but to give a run down of many blu rays. Some seem very lacking to say the least.

Criterion and now all of the sudden Paramount are producing high encodes of their blu ray releases. This is good news and other studios should follow their example.

Event Horizon Runtime: 1:35:57 Feature Size: 32,424,529,920 GB's

The Truman Show Runtime: 1:42:56 Feature Size: 35,441,018,880 GB's

Ghost Runtime: 2:06:39 Feature Size: 38,186,065,920 GB's

Days of Thunder Runtime: 1:47:17 Feature Size: 32,036,462,592 GB's

Into the Wild Runtime: 2:28:07 Feature Size: 43.22 GB's

Bottle Rocket Runtime: 1:31:43.706 Feature Size: 26,195,122,176 GB's

Man Who Fell To Earth Runtime: 2.19:14 Feature Size: 37,802,821,632 GB's

The Third Man Runtime: 1.45:13 Feature Size: 27,234,594,816 GB's

Chungking Express Runtime: 1.42:56 Feature Size Feature: 31.39 GB's

Compare those bit rates to some Warner titles…. It is known that if a film is not anamporphic and is in 1.33:1 ratio etc it doesn’t require as much space on titles like Casablanca and Third Man etc…

Casablanca Runtime 1.42:34 Feature Size Feature Size: 15.49 GB's (The Third Man get nearly almost double the space!)

Matrix Runtime: 2.16:17 Feature Size: 27.76 GB's

Speed Racer Runtime: 2.15:00 Feature Size: 20.6 GB's

Poltergeist Runtime: 1.54:28 Feature Size: 19.4 GB's

Shawshank Redemption Runtime: 2.22:32 Feature Size 23.5 GB's

Dark Knight Runtime: 2.32:13 Feature Size 35.07 GB's

Becket Runtime: 2.28:1 Feature Size 29.6 GB's

The Thing Runtime: 1.48:42 Feature Size 21.3 GB's

Casino Runtime: 2.58:20 Feature Size 43.7 GB's

Sleeping Beauty Runtime 1.15:10 Feature Size 17.9 GB's

Wall E runtime 1.37:25 Feature Size 22.21 GB's

Young Frankenstein Runtime: 1.45:40 Feature Size 27.8 GB's

Carrie Runtime: 1.38:10 Feature Size 19.3 GB's

Black Christmas 1974 Runtime 1.37:48 Feature Size 11.9 GB's

Mirrormask Runtime: 1.40:44 Feature Size 28.8 GB's

Sweeney Todd Runtime 1.56:22 Feature Size 25.6 GB's

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 runtime 1.23:24 Feature Size 21.48 GB's

Ummmm... I'm pretty sure your second list there is in GIGABYTES.

And a couple in your first, too...

Matrix Runtime: 2.16:17 Feature Size: 27.76 bytes

The Matrix is only 27 bytes?? Holy hell! That's some amazing compression!!! LOL

I think we all have brains people lets use them. Beavers website just noted them as bytes... so we all know they mean Giga so roll with it. I was TOOOOOOO lazy to fix it. :-)
but I went back thru just changed it to "GB's"

Well, size isn't everything. While it would seem that a higher bitrate would result in a better picture, it doesn't necessarily mean that discs with low bitrates look bad. Few would argue over the PQ merits of 'Casablanca' or 'Speed Racer', for example, despite their relatively low bitrates. (Of course the furor over the latter title was with the audio.) In general, though, I'd still like to see the studios, particularly WB, be a little more 'generous' in this area.

Its just warner is afraid of running out of bit man to hold up the bits so they make do on how many bitman they think they need...

Poor bitmen they are so unloved..

Agreed, if it looks good I don't care about bitrates.

As stated in the other thread, Disney puts more bigger files in their trailers than they should. I Swear it takes 30 minutes just to get to the movie sometimes if you just watch it all.
