So I was out to dinner with my dad tonight and he has no idea that I got him a Blu ray player for Christmas (Panasonic BD35). Unfortunately, he proceeded to talk about how he doesn't want one and how he can't tell the difference. Then I proceeded to tell him that he has to be blind to not be able to see the difference between Blu and his upconverted dvds. He has a 720p projector on a 9ft screen, so it is just screaming for some true HD movies.
I'm hoping that he just shuts up and deals with it, but now I feel that I may have wasted some money. My brother and I were talking about it and felt that all he needs is to see Planet Earth on DVD vs Blu. Any thoughts? How do I make him open the box and keep it on Christmas morning? |

He is stubborn like my uncle. Good luck in converting him to blu, because I am having a hell of a time doing the same. Definately play Planet Earth, it is awesome PQ, TDK also looks AWESOME. Good luck!

Go to the movie section on this site and search by top rated video. Grab a couple of those that people really say the video is outstanding (planet earth) and hopefully something he will enjoy and more then likely he will turn blu.

let him open the gift and if he doesn't like it let him take it back for something he wants. christmas is not about getting someone something you think they need or will like. it's about giving. it's not very giving to make someone keep their gift and/or like it. just my two cents worth. don't hang me.

Blu-ray has many detractors who change their minds when they see her.
You dad is probably disenchanted by Hd-Tv which doesn't always look that great. Just be ready to make peace with the fact that you will probably have to watch your own dad cream his jeans when he sees it Xo P |

Just tell him to get his vision checked to make sure he has 20/20 vision...I've known many people who thought hi def was a waste of time because they couldn't notice any difference between that and standard def, after a routine eye exam, my roomate got some glasses and then he was like "dude...you were right, hi def does make a difference."

Well I'm just gonna be like "I got a great deal on it" and tell him it still upconverts his old DVDs so he doesn't have to buy expensive Blu discs unless its some action title he really wants (and then hope that he buys Blus anyway because he will hopefully tell the difference)

just tell him that it was a good deal and if he believes the blu ray player is just the same as his old dvd player then tell him he has nothing to loose...oh and get him at least a good blu-ray that has the greatest pq so that he sees otherwise....

That's how my friend changed his dads mind. He got his favorite movie on blu (average PQ) and had it ready and waiting, then he had "Cars" standing by and his dad hasn't shut up since about how much better it is. |

Everyone's suggestion is good but the other advantage of blu-ray is the audio. I hope your dad has a decent sound system so that not only can he see the visual difference but can also hear it as well.
I would let him know that you got a great deal on the player and that it is a much better player than what he has. Not only does it support his current DVDs but it also positions him for blu-ray as well. And I am sure once he sees some blu-ray movies, he will convert over. Good luck to you. |

if your Pops has a big screen, then he probably has a good surround sound system. You should sell him on the audio upgrade as well. I enjoy the better picture, but the sound is what makes blu-ray worthwhile. Lossless audio is 'where its at'.
don't fret over it. just brings some flicks x-mas morning! |
