Default Need help with what Player to buy for Dad

Sorry but I'm trying to get a player for my dad and I know he doesn't have a huge AV system there. He just has a tv and he needs/wants a player that will play his huge DVD collection that is good enough for him right now.

If you don't have a receiver then what type of Bluray Player do you NEED?

One that decodes all the various codecs? Or one that bitstreams?

I need to know what method results in the best picture and sound....Bitstreaming or Decoding?

Right now I've narrowed the list down to the:

Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Panasonic DMP-BD35K 1080p Blu-Ray Player
Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player

And what player would you recommend for his setup? And last but not least I know that you need to have this connected by ethernet to take advantage of the BD Live but my problem is that the wireless router my dad has is on the 2nd floor and the player will be the 1st floor.

How do I get around that?

Neither. If you don't have a receiver, the default lossy audio will be chosen. Played through the TV speakers, it should be okay.

Best picture and sound quality depends on the TV your dad has. HOWEVER, get a BD-Live player and get it over with. That way he can enjoy the extras if he wants to.

You can either get a wireless repeater or get a more powerful wireless router. It's fairly easy to set one up.

So no tv can play the lossless sound thru it's speakers?

Sorry for the noobish questions...

But I thought the whole point of decoding was the fact that you would have to have a receiver...

Bump....please

And today is the last day to get The Matrix FREE with the purchase of one of the Samsungs I believe.

Again my dad does not have a A/V receiver but he has a nice HDTV. Will the tv be able to play the lossless sound codecs? And if so what type of player is required. One that decodes all these codecs or one that bitstreams?

WriteSimply already answered your questions.

No, without an AV Receiver, you cannot enjoy lossless audio.

If you are getting a receiver later, get a player that bitstreams the audio codecs, and then spend the money on a good receiver later on.

If you get a player that is BD-Live capable, you can either run a cable from the router to the player, get a wireless bridge or repeater and connect that way.

Well actually your explanation was what really helped me to be honest. I found his response to be a lil confusing to be honest. No offense to guy. I appreciate him trying to help but I was still confused about what I needed and what I didn't really need in a player.

Anyways my situation is solved. So a moderator can close or delete this thread. I'm done with it.

Thanks to everyone.

yes, You can play Lossless audio through the TV...but it will be in stereo, and more than likely the TV speakers will not do any justice.

me personally, I would look at the Sony S350, Panny BD50/55, or a PS3 (wifi)

The samsung that comes with the Matrix also looks like a contender, but I honestly have not seen the spec's on it nor read any reviews to see if its any good...so maybe look at some reviews?
