Default Onkyo 606 ps3 settings

I am confused with my Onkyo 606 and ps3 settings. I have been reading all over the internet about this and I keep hearing people talking about multi channel. I am watching Pirates of the Caribbean and on the dvd case it says the audio is 5.1 uncompressed, 5.1 Dolby Digital So here is what I am doing for audio

ps3 audio set to bitstream
HDMI to Onkyo 606 reciever

I flipped through all the listening modes and I could not choose multi channel so I have it on theater-dimensional

On the front of my Onkyo it displays PCM, HDMI, DSP, PLII

Is there something else I should change?

Thanks for your help

Change the ps3 to output via Linear PCM. Your receiver will read "Multich" on it and you will be getting lossless sound (as long as you choose it at the BD's menu).

So I did that and nothing changed, on the Display, and the listening modes, my choices are still, Mono, PLII Movie, Neo:6, TV Logic, All Ch St. Full Mono, Theater Dimensional. I do notice that when I press the multi channel button on the front of my reciever I get no sound. Do I need to change a setting somewhere else?

On the receiver, you need to set the listening mode to "Direct."

If the PS3 is set to output audio as PCM, and the receiver is set to the Direct listening mode, and you have the appropriate HD audio track selected on the disc (uncompressed PCM in the case of Pirates of the Caribbean), then you will be reaping the rewards of HD audio. You can verify what audio format the PS3 is outputting by pressing "select" on your PS3 controller/remote.

Hope that helps.

Either your information is wrong, or it's different on the 805.

By selecting "direct", you disable all speaker distance, Audyssey etc.. which may not be ideal.

Onkyo should be hooked up with HDMI only. Ps3 setting should be set to Linear PCM. And you should be getting lossless audio. Keep in mind, depending on the disc, you sometimes have to select uncompressed audio or it will play the lossy Dolby Digital track.

K- if you're getting listening modes, then something is wrong. The 605 at least can't do those surround modes with the HD audio codecs, and I think the 606 is the same. Only the Audyssey and Direct modes are available. Sounds to me like you're not selecting the right one in the disc's menu on startup.

When you hit 'Display' on the PS3 during playback, what audio codec is displayed?

Ok so when I pressed select on the ps3 it said Dolby Digital. I then started messing around with the listening modes in the setup menu on the reciever. For my Dvd player it said last valid for analog/PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, DF 2ch and DF Mono. I saw that you could select Direct along many other listen modes in this menu. Is this what I should do. Any thoughts.

If it says Dolby Digital, you are not choosing the lossless audio track. Go into the menu and select it.

If you did and it's STILL showing Dolby Digital, then you still have your PS3 outputting sound via bitstream on HDMI. Change it to Linear PCM. Don't worry about the "Direct" bit- this isn't something you have to change in the Onkyo to hear lossless.

...one of those two solutions will take care of your problem.

The problem is that you have the PS3 set to bitstream audio. The PS3 will not bitstream DTS-MA or True HD. When set to bitstream, and given an HD audio source, the PS3 automatically changes the output to standard DD or DTS.

Switch the PS3 to output PCM, make sure the proper audio track is selected from in the Blu-Ray menu, and the Onkyo will figure it out from there.

If you can't hear the difference in the HD audio tracks, use the "info" button on the PS3 to see the audio transfer rates. It will be noticeably higher when using an HD source.

When using your ps3 you do need to set it linear pcm, but if you have a standalone blu-ray it would be set to bitstream. The ps3 will put in Multi-channel. The ps3 isn't the best blu-ray for audio.

Don't know where you're getting that information. Also, not all standalones can bitstream all the HD codecs. The only difference between PCM and Bitstream is the little lights on the receiver.

I don't know how any blu-ray players you have had in the past year my friend and he's discussing the ps3. My first blu-ray player was Samsung BDP-1200, PS3, BD-300, Panny 30, and now Panny 55. I have been in the eveloution of the blu's my friend and if you are comparing audio to a standalone and a ps3 you will always lose the battle. The Ps3 is great for the features, but if you are telling me that Linear PCM is the same has TrueHD. Take a look in your PS3 settings and see what it says. I challenge any PS3 audio with Panny 55. Video game audio is different than movie audio. The next blu-ray I'll get is the Oppo b83!

OK OK I figured it out. I kept going to the BD/DVD settings on the adjusting the audio. Further down on the menu there is sound settings in the ps3 and for some reason it was only set to output a couple 2 ch settings. So I changed all the audio output settings to what the onkyo can output and shabaam the multichannel lite up on my reciever. I new it was something simple. Thanks for all the replies

I disagree in every way, and your statements that Linear PCM and TrueHD are somehow different and that "video game audio is different than movie audio" confirms that you honestly are basing this on inaccurate information and opinion. Lossless is lossless, and it doesn't matter what does the decoding- player or receiver.
