Default Sad day.

Its a sad, sad day.

I just completed the online RMA form to send my PS3 in for service/replacement

I have had it for just over two years, so I figure I really can't complain... well, at least not complain TOO much.

I have never had any problems with the Blu-ray playback, but with games it has had difficulties for a while. Some demo's would never load (tiger woods golf) but there were no other issues.

When the demo for mirrors edge came out, it started to develop a "flickering" of some parts of the picture, large portions which were obviously drawn as a polygon would all of a sudden turn black, then would get painted again.

Tonight, I started seeing that flickering on other games, and she has developed a definite shift to the color green.

I have a question for anyone who has sent in their PS3 for service. I completely expect that they WON'T fix and return the one I send, they ship out a replacement, and fix mine to send to someone else. That said, will they send me the same model back again? I have an original backwards compatible 60gb, and would kind of like to stick with that model if you know what I mean.

Are you sure its not your TV? My parent's old TV did that in its later years.

Yep, sure its not the TV... its only 11 months old.... and the flickering polygons in game play DEFINITELY tell me something is wrong. But thanks for the suggestion. On the upside, with shipping and tax, it will only cost $160 to get it repaired. Less than even a cheap player, and less by far than a new PS3

Well good luck with that man. I've never heard of a PS3 with that issue before. I'm sure that customer support was just as surprised as you were with this issue.

At least they will be replacing it with another 60GB model? I've heard horror stories, but typically they are warned first before they send in their PS3 that they aren't getting the same model back.

I thought they had to send the same model back? I'd be mad as sin if I sent in a 60gig with BC, memory card, etc... and got a stripped down version back.

I've heard people on here get told from Sony that they currently didn't have any of the model in question in stock so they sent out a 'Brand New' () one instead.

EDIT: Its actually one of the biggest reasons why I would never send my PS3 in for service to Sony if I can fix the issue myself.

Same here. ...sort of, well, mine was kind of literally broken. As in, physically, so i obviously didn't get my exact same 60 gig launch unit back. However, they DID send me a 60GB model with backwards compatibility. And yes, that was after they had been discontinued for whatever stupid idiotic reason.

No, they can send out a non-b/c model, but you don't have to accept it. Also you can ask for a refund of $200...

You didn't buy an extended warranty from where you bought it? Those come in handy to prevent things like this.

When I sent my 60gb PS3 in this last summer, the customer rep told me they keep an X amount of new 60gb PS3 in their inventory to replace ones that have gone out. Sure enough they sent me a brand new one that still had all plastic film on it.

I had to send my 60gb back, and got a 60gb back. Not the same unit, but it was definitely nice knowing I got the same BC back.

Does anybody know if you can send your PS3 back without the hard drive? I have pictures of my son that I can't afford to lose.

Thats a question to ask Sony actually as it depends on the circumstance of you sending in your PS3.

Also, just plug in a USB drive and copy it to it. the photo and select Copy and then USB drive.

I think they will complain about it if you don't include it, so I would definitely back them all up to a USB drive. In fact, I would back up the whole PS3 HDD and wipe it clean so that in case you don't get the same PS3 or HDD back you can rest assured that the pictures and anything else you have on it aren't floating around somewhere else in the world.
