Default Preferred Setup for ONKYO TX-605

I have an ONKYO TX-605, a Sony Blu-Ray player & a new Panasonic 42" Plasma and 5.1 surround sound speakers.

I currently have it set up this way.... HDMI cable from Blu-Ray Player to TV. Optical Cable from TV to Reciever. My questions:

1) Is this the best way to send the sound signal when watching DVDs or should I set up the other digital optical out from the DVD player to the reciever?
2) What "listening modes" are best on the ONKYO for: Blu-Ray Movies, regular DVDs, and TV?

Thanks for any advise!

1. Absolutely not. ...at all. Go Bluray Player HDMI Out - Onkyo 605 HDMI In. Then to 605 HDMI Out -> TV HDMI In after assigning the HDMI ports. Read your manual, it'll tell you.

2. Not sure... i just plugged my 605 in, assigned the HDMI ports, plugged the mic in to calibrate the speakers and haven't messed with it since. lol.

Default Thanks and Forgot a detail!

One thing I forgot to mention. I don't have a cable box. So cable line goes directly into my TV. I assume I'll still need something to bring sound from the TV to the reciever - probably could continue to use that optical out right? (The HDMI cables aren't two way - correct?).

Yes you will continue to use optical out for cable sound from your TV to your receiver.

Right. ...for the SD cable.

Definitely don't go using an optical cable passing through your TV for your blu-rays though. That would be dumb. Go direct from the BD player to the 605 through HDMI.
Man, so you're watching Standard Definition cable on a High Definition TV? ...with stereo lossy sound going through a Onkyo 605? Ha... I wouldn't even bother with cable. lol. You should check out Apple TV. They've got plenty of HD TV and movies shows for you to rent or buy... Just saying.

Thanks all. I'm going to run out and get another HDMI cable so I can hook this thing up correctly!

I'm wondering if this will fix my 'listening mode' problem... maybe my ONKYO will automatically select the best option when I re-set it up - depending upon how the DVD or Blu-Ray was recorded... True?

Regarding the TV. I'm pretty sure I'm getting digital sound and HDTV just by plugging the cable into my new HDTV (Panasonic TV & Comcast Cable). Is this possible? Sure looks & sounds better. Doesn't matter too much as I rarely watch TV, I hate commercials (funny, I'm in advertising ) so the wife and I watch all the shows a year late on Netflix.
