Not sure if you're using a PS3 but this thread may be of some help:

You cannot achieve 7.1 sound over optical. You also can't use uncompressed sound over optical. You'd need HDMI (or if your player has analog outputs for 7.1).

Is this statement true? I believe your statement as far as the PS3 is concerned, but I bought my current sony receiver 3 years ago, and it's a 7.1 receiver ... but all it has is coax and optical.

So I am not so sure it's impossible to get 7.1 sound over optical (in general)

It is true, all 7 discrete channels cannot be transmitted via bitstream over an optical connection. However Pro-Logic IIx adds post-processing to 5.1 channel and stereo signals, creating a realistic 7.1 channel surround environment from 5.1 channel movies and stereo sources. Also 6.1 can be used with Dolby Digital EX, which adds the 6th channel, also the 6th mono channel can be transmitted to the 7th speaker as well. However true 7.1, meaning 7 discrete channels cannot be sent over optical.

Exactly, and also, I did mean for lossless because you cannot get 7.1 channels with regular Dolby Digital and DTS sound formats. Only 5.1 and 6.1 (6.1 meaning DTS-ES descrete where your reciever detects/decodes the extra rear channel).

To the OP: we can't help you "achieve the best sound from (your) surround sound" if you don't tell us what you got. Seriously, we won't laugh at you.

Welcome!!!
I vote for HDMI, regardless of what equipment you have. A single cable vs. video cables and audio cables...cleaner, better, the clear winner..........unless chuck norris says otherwise!!!!!!!!!!!

Using that Onkyo, you can get lossy 6.1 through Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES. If the BD discs have these tracks, you can get lossy 6.1.
