Default PS3 Fan Noise

So, I know this has been beaten into the ground, but does anyone have any advice for the irritating fan noise on the PS3? I watched 2 Blu Rays tonight, and just into the 2nd one, the fan was really irritating. I have everything vented, and the PS3 wasn't hot. Do stand alone Blu Ray players make the same noise? Maybe I should pick one up for long movie nights? Thanks for the advice!

The stand alone my parents have is silent from the viewing area. The newer 80gb PS3's stay quieter longer than previous ones. If you can afford a seperate Stand Alone I would go for that instead.

All my PS3's are quiet & there 60gig OG models. People act like the PS3 is as loud as a 360. Every SA I've had has been very very quiet. I'd get get a good one if money permits?

My PS3 fan gets pretty loud and irritating during silent moments in movies/games, but when my roommate turns on his 360... I laugh and feel a lot better.

I remember that i went to see my brother not long after he bought a Sh*tbox 360 to check it out, and as i went into his room i thought there was a hoover being used!!!!!

When the PS3 came out i got him to exchange his 360 for a PS3, he said he's never noticed the fan on the PS3.

My set up now incorporates my PS3 near my bedroom window, see my gallery - photos added on 02 March - when i open the bedroom window, while watching a blu the fan nose practically disappears.

I must say though that i have never heard the fan while playing a game.

I just put my ear next to the ventilation holes on the right hand side and I didn't hear anything at all from the fan, I think it may actually be quieter than my laptop.

Probably, my guess is the audio from Top Gun is just much louder than the fan is.

I have problems with my PS3's fan noise in my viewing enviroment at times also. I like the PS3 as a BD player and dont think I want to invest in a standalone or buy a newer PS3. I normally dont have a problem while playing games, but when the fan kicks into high gear durring movies, it can get annoying.

Try vacuum cleaning all the vents especially the one at the back and spray a can of compressed air through the back vent. That should get some dust off the fan leading to much cooler operation.

360 plays blu-rays now?

Otherwise, can we compare the noise my PS3 makes playing Blu-rays to the sound my blender makes whipping up a frooty beverage? Cuz that joint has nothing to do with BD either.

In the beginning of your paragraph, you state that this issue has been beaten to the ground. Then you state that you have it vented and the PS3 isn't hot, gotcha. Then you end the post with asking in a PS3 section of the forum if you should replace your PS3 with a stand alone player.

Next time asking for advice on a replacement stand-alone player for your PS3, I do not recommend posting it here as you more than likely will not get a warm welcome.

Strange thing is my PS3 is quite silent. My Wii is noisier than my PS3 !
Then again My PS3 is in an open space so it gets air and does not overheat.

My 40 gig is silent for about the first 15 minutes of operation, then kicks into the next gear for however long i have it on. I can run it all day and it won't get any louder. I have it completely out in the open and clean it weekly. The fan noise i get in that "second gear" is not noticeable if i'm pumping my speakers pretty loud during a movie, but if i'm playing a game or the movie i'm watching gets quiet, it's very noticeable from about 10 feet away. It's annoying at times, but i've resigned myself to it until high end standalones are affordable or the PS4 comes out.

I have one of the loud 80 GB models, and I put one of these in my ET stand behind it blowing hot air out the back.

Works like a charm. I just let it run all the time. I can hear it while everything is off, but not while I'm watching a movie. It keeps my PS3 out of the jet engine mode even while watching a DVD.

I bought it at Target for about $5.

I blew mine out with a small air compressor and it helped a lot a few months ago and I have yet to hear it go back into the jet engine mode. My friend has a PS3 that he got the same time I did and his goes into jet engine mode after only a few minutes.
