I don’t have access to UHD home theater, so feel perfectly free to chalk me off as the “sour grapes” guy.
But judging from any comparison shots that I’ve seen so far, I see a nice organic rendering of the film grain, appreciate in most instances the subtle changes in the grading and color timing, but I fail to see anything that could be described as “new detail and things”. Again, you guys seem very enthusiastic about the UHD version, and I trust your judgement. Just when it comes to comparison shots that can be viewed in an Internet browser (undoubtedly takes away from the quality!) even on a nice Eizo monitor or LG 2K OLED TV (proper color profiles activated), I’ve yet to see substantial new detail. |

Thanks for that, good collection of all the links.
Totally get where you're coming from. It is an at times softer, at times grain-filled image, since the source is film, rather than a crystal clear sharp image that you might see from something "filmed" digitally today. But for an example, on the right side of this one, the (upscaled) Blu-ray is a smudgy mess with compression artifacts, while the UHD has a nice fine grain. The same is true of many of the other screenshot comparisons. |

I love film grain, or in more detail: The grain carries the information, and any attempt to suppress that yields to artistic disaster, so: I love film grain. To a degree, I also understand what you mean by "smudgy" -- the UHD shots seem "calmer", "more consolidated (naturally)". I do recognize that the UHD shots (even disregarding the new grading) are of higher quality! But in terms of details that the film as presented actually registered, picked up from the actors and sets, like: skin, fabrics, miniature detail: This is the area where I fail to see a substantial difference. So far, I think the existing Blu-Ray had pretty much picked all that up already. Last edited by Ebab; 12-19-2017 at 06:30 PM. |

No way this movie was made in 1982... right? What a great looking and sounding movie! This had some of the best use of surrounds I have heard in a while. I never saw this before, so this was my first experience, but for all I knew this was a relatively new movie!
This may be the best looking movie I have seen yet, in terms of catalogue releases that is. So glad I got this! |

They did. They had excellent camera and optics, great post production processes, and great sound (even if not in a specialized multi-channel playback format). You can still make a crappy looking film with modern technology. Chris |

Great excuse to watch the film again knowing what the blu ray looked like while still fresh in the mind, then leaving your jaw wide open while watching the UHD. .
