Here's something that danny_boy posted over at OT.com which sheds some life on the new mix:

Quote:
On page 32 of the latest edition of DVD review there is an interview with Matthew Wood:

Regarding the sound mix he says:

We have everything here that I could go through and all we have is a 4 track master that we used in 1997 to create the special editions; music, sound effects and dialogue all layered on top of each other with no separation.

So starting in 2004 we began the meticulouse job of going throughall the original elements of sound effects that were in Ben Burtts library.

Finding the original music masters and putting those back in synchronisation with the picture , and then pulling the dialogue from the original 1/4 inch master tapes and all the ADR masters to create a 5.1 or 6.1 master. It was a meticulouse labour of love to make sure every single sound effect, piece of dialogue and music that you heard was from the original..

It was'nt going to be a new piece of dialogue or a new take that you were not familiar with.It all had to have the emotional impact of the original, we just had to update it for the modern soundstage.

We would play the 4 track master that was used in the 70's then carried through the 80's VHS period, through the laserdisc period in the 90's then up until the special editions, then play back all the elements that we had put together from miles and miles of magnetic tape that we transfered into pro tools, rebuilding it in 30 second increments, listening for the right laser, the right darth vader breath, the right foot step.

Luckily we are both huge star wars fans(Wood and Dave Accord--clone wars sound designer) so it was not hard to do because if things were not right you just felt it.

We used our huge fandom as well as our professional prowess to make it work.

Watch them in release order: 4,5,6,1,2,3.

This has already been discussed to death, but my suggestion would be #4, #5, #1, #2, #3, #6.

The problem with watching #6 before the prequels (even though that's how everyone saw it theatrically) is that you know the ending of the story before you know the beginning of the story. In my suggested order, you know most of Luke's story, then you learn how Vader came to be, then you find out the resolution.

The first 8 Bond films were done in 4K as well as Moonraker the others were done in 2K.

Go by the Episode numbers, period! It's so much more satisfying and adds a whole new dimension to the impact of each film on its own. What I have done with the DVDs once was to watch two movies back2back on three following nights... On night one: Episode I and II, on night two: Episode III and IV (which is a really cool experience in itself) and on night three: Episode V and IV.

The only one I've seen was posted a few hundred pages back . It was for a litho w/ Anakin and Luke in their fighters. It was available at foxconnect.com to the first 1,000 pre-orders, but is sold out as of 8/1.

That's quite an interesting take on things. It's as if you were doing a 'flashback' with the PT (think of The Godfather Part II). That makes me think, why not 4-1-5-2-3-6? Both 4 and 1 deal a lot with separatists and rebels...5 and the 'revelation' relates a lot to the romance in 2...and just as 3 ends up with the rise of Vader, 6 ties everything together (also 3 is Wookies, 6 is Ewoks)...

EDIT: @Torgon: it's just that an 'exclusive' (Oh! The "e" word!) would make me cancel my pre-orders and would make me have to wake early or sleep late to get it from the store!

I think most UK on-line retailers have the senitype with an order. There was that Comic-Con lithograph deal as well.

I'm surprised we haven't seen any limited editions yet. I wonder if Lucasfilm just want to get this release out of the way (in a good way).

For those interested there are some new books available:

The Art Of Ralph McQuarrie (Hardcover Limited Edition)

The Art Of Ralph McQuarrie (Japanese Celebration Edition)

What are the odds that this is the cell?

I wish some real info would be released about these discs...how far in advance does DVD Beaver and some of the others get a copy before the actual release?

Has anyone steams the 720p samples on youtube via their HDTV. I did yesterday and they look pretty sweet! I know the older tvs don't have that capability but if your does check it out.

Is anyone thinking of ordering the UK version instead of the US version? I certainly am. From the pics on Amazon, I definitely like the UK packaging better. They both work out to just about the same price. Any thoughts?

Who are you kidding? What more news do you want? LOL. I think we all know your point of view on this release (I'm disappointed.... George Lucas cheaped out on us....). If you feel that way why would you even bother to budget for this release right now? Wait for the reviews. No one has to buy this thing right away. Why not wait until the Holidays and have someone get it for you? That way you can keep your 'street cred' and say "I never bought this release!" but with a mild disclaimer that: "However, someone did give me a copy... but not a dime of my money was given to that evil Bastard who makes movies I enjoy! HA!"

Anyway, I am buying this set and just for the entertainment factor of "What while he say next?!?", I urge you to buy one too. Anyway, buy it, rent it, borrow it from a friend, whatever. I hope you enjoy the blu rays.
