The continuity behind it did not bother people from 1983 when Ian played the Emperor to 2004 when it was changed for the DVDs. So I don't think it was ever a big deal. It was made a big deal when it was changed. I think it was fine. Sure the original ESB Emperor didn't look like Ian but different people play the same parts all the time Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney look nothing like one another and all play Batman in the same continuity.

This is different, because it's in the fifth episode of a clearly ongoing story, but the first three episodes and the sixth epsiode had a different actor. That would be like if The Two Towers had Sean Connery as Galdalf, but Ian McKellen played him in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King.

I still say release order is the intended way to watch them. Cause many things in 1 thru 3 mean noting if you didn't watch the originals. For instance Boba Fett holding the helmet in AOTC has no significance if you didn't watch the orignials.

4,5,6,1,2,3

So someone played the part in 5, then it was changed for the rest.

But even if you disagree, George Lazenby plays James Bond in one movie, but Sean Connery plays James Bond in the movie before that and after that. So even going by your train of thought, it's been done.

Not necessarily. Once people get to TESB, they'd be reminded of that scene and know that it's now that boy grown up.

The scene is designed for audiences to say "and here is how he gets to continue his father's legacy"

Just like Anakin killing Sand People is designed to showcase "shades of Darth Vader". Scene is not the same if you don't know this is the future Darth Vader.

So on and so forth.

Again, not necessarily. There's nothing wrong with reinterpreting scenes to mean different things depending on what order you watch the movies in. For example, the "I am your father" scene may no longer be a twist if you watch it in series order, but it could work just as well for someone if they are kept in suspense wondering if, when, or how Luke will ever know the truth.

Anyone is free to interpret things differently, that is true.

Still not how it was originally designed to be interpreted.

I keep going back and forth on whether he's a genuinely cool bad guy, or just a blatant ploy to sell action figures to 8-year-old boys. He's one of the Phantom Menace's highlights and steals every scene he's in. But everything about his design: the horns, the body paint, the tattoos, is so overdone, he can come close to looking ridiculous at times. I want to take him seriously, and I mostly do. But there's always part of me who can't quite jump on board with his following.

Remembering a joke I read once that Maul looks like he's auditioning for the band KISS doesn't help.

Putting it that way, Darth Maul might as very well be the Stars Wars universe's equivalent of the WCW Kiss Demon.

You are only seeing things through how you enjoyed them. A new viewer doesn't see Boba...Jango...they see a child losing his "father".

1-6 work great if you do like I did, wich is watch with an open mind and see t with a whole new audience (like several family members that never saw it in original form).

I made the plunge and finally started collecting these films on Blu-ray. Since I got the steelbook for The Force Awakens, I decided to get the steelbooks for parts 1-6 too, collecting them one-at-a-time. I guess these should tie me over until the theatrical cuts of 4-6 are out.

Thankfully I've resisted the urge to do that. I do have the 2006 double sets which include the 2004 SE and the original theatrical, but I think I'll sell those since the despecialized editions seem superior.

I watched Empire Strikes Back last night to kind of get me in the mood for Rogue One this week sometime. BD looked a lot better than I remembered, I guess due to watching on the new TV. Usually larger screen makes things look worse though, so I dunno. It looks super colorful, while I remembered it looking too bleached of color. Good detail despite grain management, though could be better. Still dying for a remaster but it was more watchable than I thought. Weird.

However that frozen grain is now super obvious at 60". Blech!

The OT looks so much better to me because of them being filmed. A shame that Lucas didn't have the tools that other do now. 70mm Rogue One has me pumped.

Forget Hateful Eight. The new Alexa 65mm is gonna blow us away!

I have that set too. Mine is a Best Buy exclusive tin box set. Don't sell yours yet! It's the only officially released version of the unaltered OT on DVD!

I think Empire is the best out of the three originals in terms of overall PQ. The skintones in particular look a bit more natural to me compared to the overly red-orange look on A New Hope and Jedi. The image also looks a tad softer in a good way (less oversharpened).

But, yeah, it too badly needs to be redone.
