What are some specific titles so we can avoid these?

Any title in HDR that requires subtitles to watch.

I have not remotely experienced this, in either color or BW subtitled films that had a HDR pass.

I watch most movies with subtitles, foreign or not and there’s only been maybe one film where I thought the subtitles felt too bright, and that was specifically The Exorcist. I turned down the luminance using my ub820. When I rewatched on my newer (better) tv, had no issues with it looking too bright.

I have a real problem with Criterion's HIGH AND LOW. Great film, but the white subtitles are very hard to read in several scenes. I wish they would rerelease it with yellow subtitles.

Similarly there are some cases where the inclusion of HDR made the film look a little worse. But yeah, I agree with your point. and I've suggested people get the BFI release of Seven Samurai over the CC release because of the HDR/DV option there.
What are some examples where a 4K SDR release improves substantially on a Blu-ray sourced from the same master? I’ve heard about the Apu Trilogy and McCabe and Mrs. Miller, but are there others? Also, I know there’s a marked difference between the Criterion blu-ray and UHD of Werckmeister Harmonies.

I haven’t… yet. But generally HDR highlights don’t bother me too much anyway.

When I posted that I was thinking in general terms of 4K SDR still improving over a previous BD release, not necessarily from the same scan. So stuff like Branded to Kill for instance got very high praise for its 4K transfer, and was a big improvement over the BD. I expect that to be the case for Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo/Sanjuro as well.

For stuff sourced from the same 4K scan, the differences probably won't be as significant in many cases, Something like Night of the Living Dead 4K for instance is considered an upgrade over the BD for those that have compared the two. Kurosawa's Dreams is another that shows a very noticeable improvement in colors and detail over the BD. I thought it might have been a different scan/restoration even. There are a also a couple Kino SDR releases that members (and the site review) seem to indicate are better than the BD from the same scan, including Bob le Flambeur, Cannibal Apocalypse, and their new release of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (also released by Eureka in 2022).

Well to be fair, the UHD of Dreams does have HDR and I think DV. I was under the impression Bob Le Flambeur wasn’t a massive upgrade.

As for The Apu Trilogy, I understand the Criterion Blu-ray edition has encoding issues, but I’m sure there’s next to no difference between the UHDs and Carlotta’s Blu-rays.

Oh, you're right it does have HDR, but not DV. I think even without it though you can see a noticeable improvement between the two releases. I'm surprised this site never reviewed it.

This is untrue. I know the vast majority of Kino HDR discs, if not all of them, have white subtitles, but every other HDR subtitle I've come across has been a dark grey for exactly this reason.

Do you think it could be a problem with my player? I'm using a Sony x700.

It could be the player, the TV, or the combo of the two.

Saw Ousmane Sembene's Camp de Thiaroye at the recent MAMI film festival in my city as part of its restored classics lineup.

CdT was an ambitious military drama in which African soldiers who had been enlisted into the French Free Army and fought alongside France in WW2 are being returned to their native villages. During their stay in a transit camp they find that they will be paid only half their wages, which leads to mutiny. Compared to the other Sembene movies I've seen thus far - Black Girl and the short Borom Sorret - this is much bigger in scope, reminding me of some of David Lean's wartime epics. The restoration looked spectacular and I hope that we soon hear of a BD announcement.

I noticed the price on Winchester went down this past week, but my price didn’t change for my pre-order. So I cancelled, and pre-ordered again on Amazon. Anybody else notice this too?

The price dropped yesterday. It can take 24-48 hours for it to automatically adjust.

This cover makes me think of single copy machine on campus posters for student films that would hang on community college bulletin boards in the 70's next to guitars for sale slips and mimeographed ads for Tai Chi/Fondue cooking lessons:

Actually the price dropped on Yojimbo went down today, and that changed on my order quickly. I feel like cautiously re-pre-ordering might’ve been an okay call for Winchester.

Teri Garr passed away today, and I’m just heartbroken.

To say that she was even more beautiful on the inside speaks volumes. She was a brilliant comedienne in possession of a razor sharp wit. But she was also humble and kind, a real class act that faced MS with tremendous courage and grace.

I have loved Teri my entire adult life. She was an incredible woman, and though some part of me rejoices knowing that she is in a better place, free of that terrible disease, the world she leaves behind is all the darker without her unmistakable light.

Rest well, sweetheart. Thank you for bringing so much joy, and laughter, into my, and all our lives.
