I just am not very optimistic about a US version of this coming from a label likely to have better QC than Second Sight. Arrow and VS are it, really, and both seem incredibly unlikely. Thus, it seems like importing this version doesn't really have any opportunity for regret. Scream might dig up some additional features, but you'll be trading off encoding quality I'm sure.

This is all assuming a US label is going to get it and that insider info about a label working out a deal with Rubinstein over a long period of time that he then blew up last second is long out of date.
Or Scream could do like they did with Return of the Living Dead; which blew Second Sight away.

Get a whole new transfer? Sure, if their release is a few years down the road.

If a U.S release doesn't get announced in a month or two then it's obvious no one has gotten the rights yet.

Unless it's Criterion. (Which I think it might be) They tend to take their time with their releases, and truly don't care otherwise.

That's because they remastered it and Second Sight used the old master. In this case Second Sight is remastering it in 4k and letting David Mackenzie do the encoding, so I doubt anyone can do better than that. Only reason to go for a US release is if you're region-locked, really.

Or if the US release is BD-only, and thus significantly cheaper, and you have no interest in UHD.

That said I still see no reason to believe that there's a US release coming. Could there be? Sure. But it's not any more likely than it was before the SS announcement IMO.

I find it difficult to believe that Second Sight came up with the money to pay Rubinstein’s ransom all by themselves, with no financial assistance from a US label with deeper pockets.

Unless Rubinstein has some irrational hatred for the US labels, it’s going to get a release here.

I still really like the idea that Well Go is the US backer considering the success they experienced with the Phantasm films and the joint releases that we saw from them/Arrow.

I don't care the reason behind it just ecstatic all versions being done in 4k UHD so no region problems for anyone !

And I find it difficult to believe a US company has this and it hasn't at least leaked, never mind been teased or announced. I don't think there's even been a "we signed something cool"-type thing that people have matched to this.

I really can't see it being any different than 50/50 right now.

Didn't Vinegar Syndrome say something like "we just signed a deal for a big title" something or other?

The upcoming Second Sight release is practically mine even if a US label does announce a Stateside edition (which will happen - eventually) if only because I'm a packaging nut and I know SS will deliver the goods big time. US labels don't give a shit about packaging and would just as well release everything in cheap ecopacks. I come from the Laserdisc era so I'd love it if everything came in a fancy gatefold with gorgeous artwork - it just makes the release feel more special.

The Anchor Bay DVD set will be hard to top, though. It was a fantastic set for its time. Obviously the PQ can be vastly improved but everything else about that set was perfect, right down to the minimalist artwork on the box. I don't need a bunch of quotes or floating heads.

There was a FB post from a VS employee saying he just brokered a deal with a "filmmaker". Then used words like "game changer" and "making history". Another VS employee said to wait a year and that it is not something anyone would likely guess anyway. VS idea of a 'game changer' is not going to be DOTD, Peter Jackson, James Cameron () etc. etc.

Tons of titles get released without any leaks or teases. One of the studios most likely to have it (Shout Factory) have historically denied having titles just days before officially announcing them. Unless Rubinstein gave Second Sight a huge discount from what he was previously asking, a US label had to help fund the project.

This isn't "tons of titles", this is a title that has been in high demand for years, and was thought to be completely inaccessible. It's a groundbreaking deal, which has resulted in a much-anticipated region-free release being announced.

I don't expect rumours when Criterion gets the rights to Blue Velvet because the number of people who would care is extremely low. I would expect this to be a big enough deal that the chance of a leak, and that leak being picked up on, goes way up. Any US company holding the rights would also benefit from at least indicating the title is upcoming, to get some of the anticipation headed their way rather than letting SS run away with all the publicity and sales.

If we've still heard nothing by the time SS pre-orders go live, that tips the odds heavily in favour of no US release IMO. But at present, I'm simply not seeing anything to make me lean one way or the other, and people assuming there will be a US version simply because the UK one is locked are setting themselves up for potential disappointment.

I'm wondering what the extras will look like. It's a shame this couldn't have come together before GR passed because I'd have loved to see him involved with it.

On pure speculation, I wonder if his passing made Rupenstein mor willing to work with studios.

We really need to pin that conversation that the guy from Shock Waves said happened with the US distributors regarding Dawn of the Dead. It's not coming to the US anytime soon.

Peter Jackson, maybe? One of the few labels crazy enough to release Meet The Feebles in the current climate.

While I agree, GR was asked about this film on camera numerous times over the years. I don't know what more he could possibly add to the discussion.

I don't need NEW extras; just give me ALL existing extras and cuts.
