Successfully cancelled my Amazon.it order. I ordered it when it was was 18.99 EUR around four days ago, thankfully it never dispatched.

Just too much wrong with this release:

Encoding error on 4K Zombi remaster
Pink florescent lights on 4K Zombi remaster
Other cuts are encoded using PC levels and have blown contrast

Think I'll just stick with my Arrow edition for now and hope there's a more definitive release on the way.

It's a pity mr capsaholic didn't get a grab of the helicopter shot when they first see the mall from the air ("looks like a shopping centre, one of those big indoor malls") as it's been timed to look very blue in the new 4K transfer.

I posted the below in the Italy thread. Black level isn't right at all across all the BDs. Grading on the new remaster looks a work in progress. I can't view the 4K disc so don't know how that fares.

Does look better in motion elsewhere without the digital nasties but now I know it's not my TV settings that were wrong. I'll put them back to what they were now...

I think I was convincing myself it was better than it was earlier through wishful thinking (and the lack of smearing, edge enhancement artefacts, etc. which is about the only thing this release now has in it's favour).

On the plus side, all that scanner noise from older releases that had the European cut is gone on the new one.

I think someone needs to go back to that raw full perf scan and start again with the post-scan mastering....

Is the 4K disc graded the same, Geoff?

The blacks are definitely screwy on the other masters but I didn't feel that the blacks were worth fiddling with on the new remaster, they're not super deep but they looked okay to me.

Oh, and another thing: I compared the 2.0 audio on the Argento cut to the mono in the Anchor Bay DVD of the movie and it's identical as best as I can figure it, so the raw production audio was always part of this version of the film.

Speaking of the AB DVD, the crazy thing is that the Argento cut looks rather nice already! That transfer avoided the baked-in smearing seen on the theatrical/extended DVDs (which was carried over on to the AB and Arrow Blu-rays) and it's got good colour and detail.

In this instance, it's a good thing. I haven't even received the set yet and I'm already bummed out. I already own the Japanese set, so there's no consolation there.

It would just be nice if this classic had any decent freaking BD release. The Anchor Bay has tons of issues, but there's no reason to get anything else when they're all f**ked in different ways. Sigh.

I'd love for Arrow to have another crack at this. They've come a long way since their current release. They'd probably do a great job.

Whoa! Glad I grabbed the Umbrella Blu when it was around $8 on Deep Discount.

If you have that or the Arrow Blu AND the Ultimate Edition DVD, you should be set until a decent release finally comes along.

Yep. I've got the Umbrella and the AB 4-disc set, so now it's back to playing the waiting game.

Do the DVD's in the Arrow set suffer from PAL speed-up?

been playing around with the screen caps between the Arrow UK and the new Italian release and I expected the new transfer of the Argento cut to look good.. but compared to the Arrow of the U.S. theatrical it looks... well not good.

I do own the Arrow UK blu I think I bought it right before it went OOP years back or was it that it went OOP and found it at a decent price I forget.

Sadly I don't have much faith in many home video companies doing this film justice especially with all the different cuts of the film.

Personally I'd love for Synapse do do a box set and they should just charge $149.99 for the set direct from them and Diabolik only. I think it would be the only way to pay for the rights. If they needed a partner I'd say Arrow for the UK release. I don't mean to sound like I hate Scream Factory but this film is way too important and with Screams track record and the fact they never divulge their practices much along the way it would be scary to think they would do a rush job and then we are stuck still with wrong color timing, encoding and on and on.

This film needs to be handled by those who can research it take their time with the restoration. I'd like to think that Quality of the end product would be important to the rights holder... if they are only money hungry and could care less about how they look in the end... we could just be stuck with the transfers like this new release. I'm sure Don May is probably thinking don't throw Synapse under the bus no way we can afford it. but they are the ones I wish could do it. I still think the work they did on the Demons Steelbook releases are above and beyond what I would never have expected anyone to go thru. A lot of care was shown and it says a lot.

I still would love to have that 3D version also. I'd assume this would be part of the rights that the 3D would get a BLU release also.

I think that the Anchor Bay release has a slight edge over the Arrow release. Arrow's has slightly better picture quality but the AB's is presented with the OAR and the original mono track.

I thought the Arrow BD also contains the mono mix?

The Arrow has less DNR, better colors, and the stereo mix is quite good. The 5.1 is awful on all releases. No bass for the Goblin score.

Less DNR? Maybe. Better colors? How so? OAR and mono track make it preferable in my mind.
