Yeah $464 now, but nothing incoming according to their operators.

I've been checking eCost every day for about 3 months now looking for a refurbished Denon 4308CI ($1229) but the summer was quite an expensive one (wedding, honeymoon, DMB shows, Formula One week-end, Blu-ray Discs) so I'm going to go with the 805 for now and look at a Denon in another year or so.

Just curious if anyone has bought this RX in Canada, incoming from the US?

I'd jump on one in a heartbeat from Amazon.com, if I knew I wasn't going to get screwed for duties, etc... Then again, even paying duties/taxes/shipping/rate conversion, it'd still be a LOT cheaper from Amazon.com than any retailer in Canada (Cheapest price I saw on shopbot.ca was $1499!)

I've read that on media orders (DVDs, etc) from Amazon.com, that they're shipped from a warehouse in Canada. Anyone know if the same is true for electronics?

Another odd thing is, Amazon.com wouldn't ship a Yamaha receiver to Canada, but they will an Onkyo..

90% of electronics on Amazon.com do not ship to Canada, including Onkyo, you have to read the fine print:

# Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S.

Ahh.. see that now on the item page. Odd, it let me put it in my cart, and proceed to checkout. I was right up to the point of clicking "order" too. The Yamaha items made a note a lot earlier in the process saying they couldn't be shipped to Canada. Oh well...

Anyone in the Montreal area or vicinity, looking for a "deal" on an 805: There's a 23rd anniversary "sale" on at Centre HiFi. I found the 805 in their flyer for 998$ with a "free" set of JBL Venue surround speakers, and although that's not Amazon.com prices, it beats the hell out of $1499 elsewhere.

*schemes on how to sneak the 805 past the wife*

Just pop down to Vermont and buy one, then scheme on how to sneak it past customs.

So how does one bi-amp their speakers? I have an 805 and will be getting two Salk Songtowers and a Songcenter. I have two Energy take-5 satellites for surrounds. I don't use 7.1, only 5.1. Sounds like I am a candidate for bi-amping, I just need to know how. Pardon my ignorance.

Easy peasy! Just go into the menu on your 805 and change the speaker type from "normal" to "bi-amp." Then hook the front speaker outs on your 805 to the high level binding posts on your speakers and the rear speaker outs on your 805 to the low level binding posts on your speakers.

Your player cannot bitstream the HD-Codecs. It will only decode True HD internally and send it via PCM. So unless you have a player that can bitstream the HD-Codecs, you will never see DTS-Master Audio or Dolby True HD light up on your receiver.

Well if you can find one a Panasonic BD30 bitstreams all HD-Codecs and its newer version is coming out so you can ge tthem for cheap, however it wont internally decode but it will bitstream. Other than that a Sony S350 or PS3 would be my choice.

It won't sound any better than your S300 decoding and sending out as PCM through HDMI.

If you're using HDMI you should set your player's HDMI audio output to PCM and you should notice a remarkable difference.

Yea but the S300 doesnt do DTS Master Audio, he was asking about a player that does all the new formats. And there is no difference in the player or the receiver doing the decoding. Only difference would be is if the player is doing the decoding and you are using the analog outputs. In this scenario the player is using its DAC's and your not using the better DAC's on your receiver.
But in logic player decoding vs bitstreaming using a HDMI is the exact same.

Your BD player, the sony BDP-S300, did receive a FW upgrade to decode TrueHD internally. Depending when you bought it, it may already have the latest FW. Just set it to PCM over HDMI and it will decode TrueHD when the selected track is TrueHD. Really there is no advantage of decoding it in the player or receiver. Some may argue it, but the audible difference is nill.

As far as dts-HD MA, the earlier Sonys (minus the PS3) are out of luck like many of the other earlier players.

yep, it got the fw upgrade for true-hd. my onkyo 805 just doesnt say true-hd when playing a true-hd disc but from what im reading its probably still decoding it.
