To be fair, after he said that he softened up on the idea. This was before the originals were released as "bonus material" on those LE DVDs, and later he started calling them the "Classic" versions and not the "rough drafts." Say what you will about the quality of them, but it already went against the idea he presented that they would be lost forever on deteriorating tapes.

But yeah, at the time, I remember reading that and being pretty dismayed at his attitude towards the original films. They definitely deserve more respect than what they've been given under his watch.

Wasn't the only reason he released the originals as bonuses was to shut people up from complaining that they wanted that version? So it wasn't a change of heart, it was pressure from fans.

It might have also been because fan-made versions were coming out, both online and in DVDs that you could buy on places like ebay. Most of them were basically just laserdisc ports at the time as well, so he probably figured he could kill the piracy market with a legit version and get fans to rebuy the same DVDs again.

Regardless of what his mindset was, he did change his tune from "they are rough-drafts that will never see the light of day again!" to more of a modest "what we call the classic versions don't take priority."

The funniest thing is Lucas also makes passionate comments about film preservation. The ultimate oxymoron.

It seems that Lucas feels the only exception to preserving a film is if a director wants to make changes to his own films. So if Orson Welles decided to add a scene in Citizen Kane where young Kane is seen flying off snow tops on a CGI sled, George would be fine with that.

He also altered EMPIRE and JEDI.He may have had the blessing of EMPIRE'S director but JEDI we'll never know as the director passed in 1987.

When you also have had friends and relatives have been victims of actual hate speech lets see if you feel it's a joke, especially since there was no indication it was.

How could anyone think that I interpret that George Lucas quote as literally being hate speech? That doesn't make sense. I used the term in the sense that Lucas is "hating" on the original versions. It was just a joke to emphasize how ridiculous I thought his comment was.

I'm probably in the minority but I don't mind the special editions at all. Ive only seen the originals as a kid on VHS though & have seen the SE much more often.

IMO the only improvement added to the SE's was the SLAVE-1 pass-by shot.

The absolute dumbest thing about the special edition version of this scene is that it shows Vader landing on the Death Star 2 rather than his star destroyer. Like, c'mon, Lucas lol.

So this is weird, I went to rewatch The Force Awakens on my iPad and iTunes wouldn't let me. However it worked just fine on the DMA app. The error message I'm getting on iTunes is: "You can not redownload this."

Have you seen the hyperbolic statements in this thread and on the internet in general when it comes to the Lucas, the Special Editions and Prequels? Let's just say if you had been serious it would be a mild statement compared to what others have said (think all sorts of unprintable things, death threats, etc).

Just bang it on the table a few times. That usually works with most Apple devices.

I just noticed on the DISNEY MOVIE CLUB, they are offering the steelbooks for Episodes 4, 5, and 6.

I know there's always a debate in regards to the past, present, and future distribution rights of these films. Well this, to me, is a sign of at least some sort of distribution deal between Fox and Disney (much like how Disney now distributes reprints of the earlier Marvel films, complete with Paramount logos intact). Seems a few legal steps closer to new versions of these films being released, and maybe a sign of potential things to come (again, to me at least.)
Lucasfilm and Fox have a distribution contract which reportedly runs until 2020, perpetual rights for Ep IV notwithstanding. Disney owns Lucasfilm, ergo Fox and Disney ARE ALREADY WORKING TOGETHER by proxy and have been since 2012. Nothing has changed regarding physical media rights and nothing needs to change: if Disney/LFL want to release any form of new edition on physical media or theatrically then Fox are contractually bound to oblige them.

[edit] That Disney are now offering the steels directly doesn't mean a great deal IMO, if they want to sell Fox's product directly then Fox aren't going to say no. I see they're not brave enough to offer the prequels though, we can't go messing with the OT-centric vibe that this SW revamp is based on, can we?

So in a way, Fox will still distribute the post-ANH films then? Cool (so long as they have the Fox logos intact).

Incidentally, it does my heart good to see the relationship Disney and Fox have.

Until the current deal runs out or Disney buy it out, sure. That's why if you buy one of the post-2012 Blu-ray releases of the movies (steels, repackaged 9-disc 'saga' set) there's no sign of Disney anywhere on the packaging and it still says © Fox as well as LFL.

But we've already seen Disney unceremoniously dump the Fox logos on the digital streaming versions (which clearly weren't covered in the contract's small print, perpetual rights to IV notwithstanding so it kept the logo) so after 2020 who knows what they'll do with the Fox logos on the films in every other medium that they'll control. They may be retained for history's sake, but several studios are terrible for keeping their own classic logos on new transfers of their catalogue films, never mind retaining somebody else's!

The one thing that applies post-2020 is Fox apparently still owning the distribution rights to IV, which Disney will remedy by trying to buy it outright (if internal talks haven't already been broached on that subject I'd be surprised) or they'll just licence the title from Fox for any post-2020 Disney/LFL boxsets. People make so much of a big deal out of all this but it's really very straightforward.
