![]() ![]() After my monthly doctor appointment, I checked out two Barnes & Noble near me, the Highland Village and Lewisville (TX) stores, and I’m happy to report both were well stocked, and every single boxed set or digipack I saw were in pristine condition. I was shocked. The Highland Village store took a while to search through. There was no discernible ordering to the movies. But they had almost everything in stock, including a gorgeous copy of Shoah. So, I grabbed that with my remaining gift certificate from Christmas. The Lewisville store had a bit smaller selection, but a broad grouping of new releases and old favorites. I snagged War and Peace, Swingtime and Dr. Strangelove there. So, I’m done until Klute comes out, and I go back to pick up more. How many, exactly, depends on whether or not I grab that Agnes Varda boxed set. This has been a nice week, film wise. A few from Best Buy, a couple pickups from Amazon UK, and now a few Criterions. The Barnes & Noble Criterion sales are typically in July and November. The July 2019 sale just started today, and per our guru of all things Criterion sales, Hariseldon, the sale runs through the end of business day August 4th. That's in store, and online. 50% off of MSRP. If you get a Barnes & Noble membership ($25), good for one calendar year, you get 10% off in store purchases, and that stacks on top of the already 50% off discount. That discount does not work on online orders. The Criterion Flash sales are also 50% off MSRP, and happen twice a year. Here are the dates of the last several sales: March 5, 2019 October 17, 2018 February 13, 2018 October 17, 2017 February 28, 2017 October 18, 2016 February 23, 2016 October 7, 2015 One spring, one in the fall. Every year, between about the middle of February to the first week of March, you'll see a sale. They'll announce it on Facebook, and if you've registered on the Criterion site with your e-mail, they'll send you an e-mail when the sale starts, too. The fall sale is in early to middle October. Also, Criterion awards loyalty points. Every $ you spend on merchandise (not including tax or any shipping) accumulates, and once you've attained 500 points, they award you with a $50 gift certificate. This usually posts within a few minutes of your qualifying for it. So, if you go over $500, and get the certificate while the sale is still going on, you can use it right away to buy more. From memory, shipping on over $50 is free for Criterion.com orders. And, only a few states (as of now) pay sales tax. Other members of our discussion will have to remind you which those are. If Criterion operates as business in the state, they must collect. Their headquarters are in New York, so New York state residents must pay. I'm in Texas, and I don't have to pay a tax. I hope that helps! ![]() |

Agreed. And, from reading discussions on the forum, the cost of parcel forwarding services have gone up drastically, pretty much negating the savings. Of course, if you have a friend stateside that would be willing to buy for you and ship internationally, maybe there's still a way. I am completely ignorant of how international shipments are inspected/opened when it comes to things like duty taxes. Luckily, I just buy from Amazon UK, and I've never had any additional charges beyond shipping.

I know there’s some crossover, and I hope I’m not stepping on toes or being out of line, but Arrow is also 50% off at Barnes and Noble! (Coupons work, no idea when it ends!)

This next Flash sale is going to put a hurting on my wallet. I’ve already earmarked $150 for the Bergman box set, and that’s just to start. God help me if they do something astonishing with spine #1,000. I want the Olympic set, too, because the history of the Games holds tremendous appeal to me. Plus, I really want to invest more heavily in documentary filmmaking. As great as theatrical releases are, entertainment-wise, when I hold a release like Shoah, Night and Fog, or The Thin Blue Line in my hand, I’m reminded, once again, of the power of the camera. This art form can accomplish so much good. It can take an unspeakable tragedy like the Holocaust, and document interviews with survivors, so future generations can see the very real faces of what happened. It becomes more personal, and less abstract, when you see firsthand how these poor men and women were affected. |

![]() I got my first ever Arrow UK blu-ray in the mail a few days ago, Theatre of Blood, and since opening it up, I've been working on a rather extensive want list, both of domestic releases, and import only releases. Sigh. I guess I'll have to get some more. It's frugal to buy them at half price, right? Tell me I'm exercising good spending fundamentals by buying them on sale. ![]() |

Today's opening salvo. Just recent releases since the last Criterion sale back in March:
Won't venture back into my local store until the 16th to pick-up Klute and probably Blue Velvet and Mickey & Nicky. Need to order Senso, Le amiche and Red Desert as well. My location never has them in stock. |

I love these sales. Found everything on my list in store...
Notorious Detour The Innocents Policy Story 1&2 Blue Velvet The Kid Brother Kiss Me Deadly And even was able to pre-order Polyester at the sale price which the first person said could not be discounted (the guy who set up the pre-order and delivery). The cashier at the front called the manager over for me and she got her to apply the discount, so now I am set on my Criterions until they announce more titles I want ![]() Last edited by Rzzzz; 06-28-2019 at 11:51 PM. |

I like digipacks and digibooks, both. The packaging allows for a lot of creativity from a graphic arts perspective. Plus, I like the production photos, actor and director profiles, pictures of movie posters, etc that often make up the pages of the digibooks.
