I don't know if this site http://www.ebertfest.com/six/films99to05.html is listing the films in the chronology in which they were screened, but if it is, it was the day we drove down there and also after we saw Tarnation which was a devastating wipe you out kind of film experience. Don't recall for sure, but that could be why.

They may be petite, but I wouldn't want to arm-wrestle them. Those steins are heavy!

I admired Persona, but I can't really say that I liked it. The cinematography was very striking. I guess that was what I liked best about it. Pretty abstract stuff.
I didn't even know how to go into it, so I think that's why I may have liked it more than you.

If I were you, I'd give it another shot.

I will. I am thinking about giving it another spin right away since I'll have it another 6 days. I felt like I was up for anything going into it. I didn't dislike it by any means, it's just that I couldn't make much sense of any of it. It was the arty-est of the arty films I've seen from the CC thus far. I hear people often give a "pre-warning," (so to say) about Marienbad, but this one has been the most elusive... for me anyway.

It is a Sundance Selects (IFC) title so I would say Criterion prospects quite good.

Weird. I consider Persona to be brothers with 3 Women and Mulholland Drive. I think they make an amazing trilogy covering many of the same things in such unique and amazing ways. 3 of my favorite films of all time.

you probably mean sisters since we've got 2 women in Persona, 3 women in.. well you get that one, and then 2 more women in Mulholland Drive.

definitely sisters.

Yeah, it's a pretty great line-up. Kind of disappointed Malick's latest isn't there, though.
There's supposed to be one additional Competition film announced alongside the Director's Fortnight line up, so there's still a possibility. Last night it was Only Lovers Left Alive that got added last.

Which would likely mean another great, in depth conversation with the Dardennes. The one with Kent Jones on The Kid with a Bike is fantastic.

Speaking on IFC/Cannes/Criterion, I hope this year sees releases of Bastards and Beyond the Hills.

Thierry Fremaux said at the press conference that he talks to Malick regularly and he hasn't got a film ready yet. Fremaux could be bluffing, but I doubt it.

I'd guess that the film yet to be announced will be Roy Andersson's Pigeon Sat on the Branch Reflecting on Existence. It seemed like the most surprising absentee from today's announcement.

i had a ball watching Persona for the first time a few weeks back. My User Review of the film is clumsy in retrospect, but it was based on my first of what will inevitably be many viewings. I was quite mesmerized by the film.

I'm just happy that I am now familiar with the source of an album cover from one of my favorite bands.

Jim Jarmusch's new film Only Lovers Left Alive would make for a perfection addition to the Criterion Collection in my opinion. I hope this happens.

And...this is the next film I'm just dying to see. Only 2 weeks until it premieres here in my town.

How do you guys think The Dark Backward would fit in with the Collection? I think its one of those weird cult movies that would fit perfectly into the line, if only due to its dark, satirical jabs at the entertainment industry.

Yeah, hopefully I'll get around to seeing OLLA in theaters. I can't wait to see Under the Skin (don't know when I'll see it, but it opens tomorrow).

I saw Under the Skin in NYC last week and I thought it was just okay but nothing great. If you want to check Only Lovers Left Alive out at the Manor theater in a few weeks, let me know. It would be cool meeting a member from this forum in real life.

Ya, nevermind, I was going to erase my message since I'm probably going to see the film with some friends. Should be a good one though.

Default Mostly Martha

Just finished watching Mostly Martha. I DVRed it off of TCM a few weeks ago when Anthony Bourdain was doing the Friday night Spotlights for March, which focused on the use of food in film.

Anyhoo, Mostly Martha is a wonderful film that I recommend to every member here. Martina Gedeck (Martha) was amazing in the lead performance. I also enjoyed her in The Lives of Others. I came to blu-ray.com to see if there was a blu review here, and couldn't find a blu-ray listing. I couldn't find a DVD listing either. Same results with searching on Amazon. Well, apparently Amazon is streaming the film, but don't have a region A blu or DVD.

Whenever I watch a great movie, I think it would be great if Criterion or some other respectable studio/distributor would release it. I have another title I cand send to suggestions@criterion.com now. Eat Drink Man Woman is the next "Food Spotlight" film up next for me.

Eat Drink Man Woman is terrific although I'd recommend watching it on a full stomach due to all the delicious food shown!

I'll reinforce the enthusiasm for MOSTLY MARTHA. I'd love for MOSTLY MARTHA to come out on Blu-ray, especially from Criterion. It did come out on a U.S. DVD from Paramount the same year that the okay but nowhere nearly as good American remake NO RESERVATIONS was in theatres. I remember picking it up at Target, of all places, in a display of half a dozen indie and foreign "food" films on DVD, like BIG NIGHT, EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN, TORTILLA SOUP (the American remake), BOTTLE SHOCK, etc. (Or was BOTTLE SHOCK displayed along with SIDEWAYS, I forget. Another fun, underrated film!) And any of these would go great with BABETTE'S FEAST.

Too bad they've stopped doing those theme displays (at least at our store) where they had a recent hit and a bunch of others with a sign assuring that "if you liked this, then you'll like these."
