Ryan Reynolds wants the movie to be rated R:

“@DPklok051: Is it going to be rated R or PG-13?" I want #Deadpool to be R. Always have. Fighting the good fight still. Lotta yelling today.

Can't believe there's still an argument around the film's rating. When you've still got a film like Kingsman hanging in the top 10 for nearly two months after release, and hopefully Mad Max will be a hit as well, pretty much proving R rating aren't financial suicide, that's not adding Fifty Shades record smashing and It Follows expanding it's underground following, despite their genre differences.

People pay for the films, not the ratings. Just make the film good to how the creative team picture it.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the cast of Deadpool has added another mutant to the cards with newcomer actress Brianna Hildebrand as Ellie Phimister, AKA Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly, and named after a song by the band Monster Magnet, Negasonic Teenage Warhead was a protege of Emma Frost who is a telepath with vast precognitive abilities.

Hildebrand joins a cast that includes Ryan Reynolds in the title role along with Ed Skrein, TJ Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, and Morena Baccarin as Copycat. The film will also feature the mutant Colossus, though Daniel Cudmore has confirmed he will not appear as the character.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Tim Miller is set to direct the movie from a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadpool is currently scheduled for a release on February 12, 2016.

I think I recall Reynolds stating that he wanted Deadpool to have the scarred face for the majority if not the entirety of the film (when he is not wearing the mask). I would have to find the quote again, but I would not expect to see his own face very much at all.

You're not wrong, it can definitely still be a success with an R rating and in fact I think the R rating attracts more adults. However a movie like Deadpool will have a strong teenager following that an R rating damages. I would be very surprised if the studio lets it be an R rated film. Same for any comic book movie.

I'm hoping Kingsman calmed any of Fox's worries about an R-rated comicbook movie.

It had smaller budget ($81 million) and has managed to pull in nearly $120M domestic and almost $330M WW.

And I feel it has a similar tone to what Deadpool will have.

Don't care about the rating for this one either way. If it is PG-13 though, they need to have fun with it. Having Deadpool drop a few F bombs that get bleeped out and then have him comment on it. Have him take out a guy/group of guys with his swords and then notice how little blood the guys must have had. Stuff like that could be hilarious.

Me too. I wouldn't turn my nose up at an R, but there's an opportunity here to bring it in as an ironic PG-13 which could be a heck of a lot of fun AND wouldn't restrict the biggest money-making demographic from seeing it. There'd be an unrated Blu-ray of course, and that'd be even better; it could start off with a few censored gags but then Deadpool turns to us and says "nah, I'm just ****ing with you".

Arrested Development does a great job of making the bleeping and censorship work with the comedy.

I agree with whoever said Deadpool is an R rated character, but that doesn't mean his film has to be R. I would probably prefer it to be R and I am glad Ryan Reynolds is fighting for it because he thinks it would be better that way. But if it is not R, it won't be the end of the world. I also agree that an R rating could attract some adult audiences.

For anyone who doesn't think Deadpool could work as PG-13, just look at any video on youtube where they 'bleep' stuff that isn't dirty. The bleeps are often funnier than the original curse word. Hopefully it'll get an R, but if not - I'm with vedeta88.

Agree that censored cursing can equal good comedy. The way they bleeped out the f-words in Scott Pilgrim was great. Mainly because they brought up the black bar that would appear.

He's actually a fan of the character, so it's not surprising to hear him say something like this.

I think the movie is going to be a huge hit either way.

The biggest reason to do an R rated version is the violence. It matters the most. Like others have said they could bleep out the cursing and it'd still be funny but they can't have him slice and dice, or decapitate someone without a good amount of blood. It's imperative for that aspect.

I think if they deliver an R rated Deadpool movie it'll still break $400m easy and THAT would open the door for so many more mainstream movies that are R rated so that's another reason I want that rating. True to the character and will pave the way for other movies with the balls to push the boat out.

I can see them filming it as an R with tonnes of cursing etc, then bleeping it all for the theatrical cut, then have an unrated version on DVD/Blu-Ray. That would keep everyone happy IMO. Though I just really want that one movie to throw caution to the wind and just go for it. If ever there was a movie to break through the PG-13 glass ceiling... it's Deadpool. Like I said, so many doors would be opened for other film-makers and other 'difficult-sell' projects might get given the green-light. We could see a true RoboCop remake, and not that bastardized hack-job from last year

As fun as it would be, I'd feel the film would be held back and a little repetitive if it became the central motif.

I'm just hoping the film ends with a teaser for a Deadpool reboot.

Oh, they'd still have to be inventive with it. If they simply used it as a crutch it'd get really old after about two minutes, so it might end up being easier for them to make it R-rated from the beginning.

The 'ironic trailer' thing at the end has been done recently too (22 Jump Street) so perhaps they'd need a fresh angle on that too, although it'd be damned funny anyway. Then he can tell us in Deadpool 2 (if there is one) what happened to the reboot idea.
