I heard that Disney prepared a 4K transfer of the original Star Wars for the National Congress film registry. Is there any truth to this?

Why would they need to do that when the film registry already has 35mm prints?

Apparently they don't have them. It's on the registry but Lucas never gave them the prints apparently. They wouldn't accept the altered versions, they wanted the originals and Lucas never delivered.

That's what I heard.

There's actually an even longer cut of it, but Lucas felt it was basically turning into it's own short movie and had to pare it down.

I personally just never liked the podrace scene much at all. I never found it that thrilling, plus it's kind of ruined by the really lame two-headed announcer alien.

And that was pretty much the only action sequence between the long stretch on Tatooine and the whole Coruscant "vote of no confidence" part of the movie. That should probably be a huge indicator of why I'm not a huge lover of the film...

It's a sign of the times and how different communication is now vs. then that, back in 1999, I didn't even know that Episode I was so reviled. I loved the movie, and as far as I was concerned, most other Star Wars fans did too.

It wasn't until around early 2001 that I started getting into message boards and forums, and boy oh boy was that an eye opener.

The truth is, I'll always wonder if I would have had the same experience with AotC and RotS that I did if they had come out in the same era as Episode I. I think I would have, to a certain extent, at least. No amount of positive atmosphere would have reduced the amount of CGI/greenscreen or made Hayden Christensen even the least bit compelling.

P.S. I ****ing loved the Pod Race. Still do.

I love the podrace. Not a great fan of the extended version on the DVD/BD, however I actually like some of the extra extra deleted scenes from the podrace than just the extra scenes that were put back in. That bit when it cuts to that little fella's wife and family after he crashes and burns in the tunnel is cold, man. And why Lucas cut that fly buzzing into Teemto's face I'll never know, it makes sense of him crashing wildly into Anakin.

I wouldn't have minded if they either went full podrace (turning it into its own mini-movie, as you say) or just left it as the theatrical cut, whereas the half 'n' half DVD/BD edit doesn't quite flow properly for me.

I don't get all the love for the pod race. It was basically a 5-10 minute infomercial for action figures and playsets that did absolutely nothing to move the plot along...

A guy can dream, can't he?

I don't think I'd realized how bad it's gotten -- don't get to the theatre too often these days -- but seeing Star Wars, man, there must've been four different superhero movie trailers, each of which looked thuddingly unoriginal, obvious, and OTT portentous, to me anyway. I could barely muster the energy to roll my eyes.

In the past, if a trailer looked good, I'd be on board; now, I genuinely feel like I can't tell the difference with respect to the superhero genre. What constitutes "looking good" when they all look the same?

I think I'm so used to the DVD/BD version of the podrace that a shorter version would feel like it's missing something at this point. Never really felt that either version dragged too much, anyway, but the stuff in the deleted scenes (extended intros, mainly) would've been too much.

Pretty much agree with that too. I mean, first of all, Lucas always loved a really good chase/racing sequence in all of his SW movies.

Also, as good as the podrace sequence is in the regular prints of TPM, it seemed to me to be even better when watched in the 3-D version - the podracers seemed almost constantly to be about to leap off the screen and run right over viewers' heads.

I don't get the hatred for the pod race. To me, it's easily one of the best parts of the movie, along with the Darth Maul saber fight.

I like that it shows Anakin as a confident pilot. The end battle on the other hand drives me crazy with all his "let's try spinning, that's a good trick" ridiculousness.

I dunno... I guess it's a case of different strokes for different folks. But one thing I am pretty sure of is that it was not in the movie JUST to sell toys. If that was the case, then the pods would have been much more simply designed to make it easier to mold them into, you know, toys. As it is, the designs they used did not make good toys.

No, Lucas is a huge fan of the chariot race in Ben Hur, so he wanted to have a Star Wars equivalent. In that respect, I think he succeeded spectacularly.

He absolutely did, I think he is brilliant.

Also agree with you about the toys, got both the Annie and Sebulba podracers back in the day, they weren't so good as toys.

Yeah the podrace is awesome, one of my favorite sequences from the entire saga.

Aside from getting Anakin & co. off Tatooine, demonstrating his piloting abilities and forging his separation from his mother, which would ultimately be the distal cause of the process culminating in his eventual turn to the dark side.

But yeah, other than that, nothing.

And even if it didn't move the plot it can still be a cool action sequence. I don't get that comment at all.
