It's just such a weird control freak issue to not only make changes as a "directors cut", but to willfully keep the originals from being produced again and make comments that scorn people who want them.

I don't get who he's trying to impress.

There are technical mistakes in The Godfather but it hasn't hurt it's legacy in the slightest.

So are we now saying the films are best left in the hands of the studios and not the creators?

I can think of a bunch of counterpoint examples to that, if that's your perspective. Hell just with Fox alone.

Only a small portion of hardcore fans will not buy/cancel(just like LOTR EE) this release, which will not be enough to impact the bottom line(revenue).

Continue to discuss the whining, *****ing, moaning, venting of distaste for this release on to deaf ears of the Internet black hole because GL is in his ivory tower shrugging his shoulders counting his cash.

*I personally do not like the changes but watching an upconverted DVD on a 117" screen just doesn't cut it. I'll probably wait though when there's a price drop around/after Black Friday to make a purcahse.
I wasn't whining last week, in fact I was railing against people complaining against this release. What a difference a couple days makes.
It should be easily #1, and the reviews on amazon are getting worse.

Not much. That's why there are the 1997 originals, 1997 Special Editions, the 2004s, and the 2011s. That's pretty much how it is imo.

I have a feeling that the light sabers will probably be updated for the 3D release. Heck, he may even make other changes that people will actually want (maybe even get rid of this new "Nooooo"). BUT, when it comes time for the Blu-Ray release, he will ONLY release them in 3D... There will be no separate 2D disc (at least not of that same version of the movie), and it will be on a 3D disc that doesn't give the option to watch it in 2D. So, you can have the preferable updates, but if you are someone who doesn't like or want 3D, or even if you do like it but also want the option to watch it in 2D from time to time you're essentially screwed.

Ying and yang will bring balance to the force, not the chosen one after all.
It's an understandable frustration IMO. Not everyone is the same, and everyone is going to have their preferences. It would be nice if those versions were to be released on Blu-Ray for those who want them (though wasn't there a problem where some of the added effects were rendered in SD and therefore wouldn't look good in HD? If so, then it kind of makes sense... but if it can be fixed, then awesome). IMO it's preferable that all versions of a movie that have been released be made available, whether it's in one pack together or sold separately.

At least the Star Trek films haven't gone through as many revisions as Star Wars.

I agree we should just wait for the reviews.

No, I don't think I made any blanket generalizations like that.

In this particular case, the director is an OCD megalomaniac who feels owning these films means he owes his fans, fans who made his empire, nothing.

In the hands of say, Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese or Ridley Scott, I say they have been trusted to listen to what other people think and take it into consideration.

Dude, George, here's a thought... if you want these changes made, make them. Then keep that version for yourself and release the ones we want to us.

George obviously does not get Star Wars or gives a shit about his fans. Why should the rights be with him when he keeps ****ing it up?

Yeah, El Jay knows whats up!

Actually, if you look at the ending credits of the 2004 DVDs, they are still credited as 1997.

What you are saying was true of the 1997 updates and release. But the 2004 DVD changes were done a bit more under the radar in that sense. As far as I know, the ending credits are completely unchaged from the 1997 version, and there is nothing with a 2004 copyright date on it.

Also, when these play on Spike and I bring up my digital cable menu, the year always shows as 1997 for the OT movies, even though the versions that they've been showing are based on the 2004 DVDs.

Nope, not at all. The PT was all done by Lucas. No one else is credited as director and his ex-wife didn't edit them, so chances are slim he does much to them at all. So, my guess they are as 'the creator' intended them to be, lol. Plus, the only film to have any issues in transfer was TPM and that will be fixed as it needed a new master for the 3D process anyway. So, we are good there. Now, if it turns out he added more Jar Jar in or has Anakin says: "No! Noooooooo!" when his mommie dies, then I will cancel the order...lol. But until then, not going to bother waiting for a rip to pop up online.

I guess George can change whatever he wants. After all, they are his movies and I don't have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is "Choice". he can alter all he wants, I don't give a rat a$$, but c'mon, give the fans a choice by releasing the originals unaltered and in good quality along with the altered versions.....let the fans decide which version they want to watch.....C'mon George, Is it really too much to ask???

Granted, these are George Lucas' movies, but he's still a d*ck for not releasing the original versions. Its like going to a burger joint and getting a cheeseburger when you ordered a hamburger. He should give the fans the option like he did with the DVDs. Not only would he make even more money by simply giving the fans what they want, but he actually might get some respect back from them.

The biggest problem is him constantly making these changes. First, 1997 then 2004 now 2011. If you have to keep making changes to something, you'll never be truly satisfied with it.

And I'd like to think that maybe this company will be better after George Lucas is dead, but the fact is it's going to get taken over by his idiotic daughter and his doofus son-in-law and the rest of his stupid family.

We never see Leia hand Chewie a medal, so it would be weird if he suddenly has one.
True, but IIRC he did get a medal in the original novel. I was hoping they would fix it to be like the book. A great example would be the updated Emperor scene in The Empire Strikes Back.
