Depends on what is a success. There is a large, strong core of Star Wars fans. They also know they need to support Phantom Menance in order for the other movies to have a good chance. My guess is it will make enough money.

I hope that the 3D is a success - I'm looking forward to an opportunity to see these films in theaters, regardless of the depth of them. |

Maybe they should have started with ESB, guarantee people will pay the money. Pinning everything on TPM, big mistake. I doubt it will not do the money needed. Who would want to sit through Jar-jar in 3-d? By far. |

It's hard to explain in words, but to me, the CGI Yoda just seems too flexible, if that makes sense. By that, I mean that stuff like his facial textures seem more like they're just a picture pasted on top of him. Also, with certain CG creatures, their movement isn't always believable when they're with a real person (they move too smoothly). I know to some the puppet in ESB and ROTJ might seem too stiff or lifeless at times, but to me that's just because he's supposed to be very old and tired, so he doesn't need to be able to move very quickly.

A bit more maturity really changed the way I felt about AOTC. Like the OT, TPM is kind of a part of my childhood. The next two of the PT I could pass on, although ROTS certainly has its merits. But I've always disliked Christensen. |

TPM in 3D is going to tank. Does George really think he can rekindle the hype at this point? I know the Toy Story 3D reissues did merely okay-ish business back when it was much more novel, and people actually like those movies (and they don't need phony 3D conversions).

The thing about the romance in AOTC is that george lucas isn't an expert writer. He could pretty much keep romantic dialogue to a minimum in the OT, but in the PT, the romance was essential to his plot and he couldn't have kept it to a couple of lines. The plot structures were less than stellar because he was writing something more complicated than he is capable of. The first star wars movie was stolen from the basic structure of a fairytale. Then he worked from there to form a basically simple plotline. With the prequels he felt he had to go bigger and in the process showed his true colors. For me it was another example of the prequel films not meshing with the originals. When I finally saw Clones, I couldn't see anything that justified Luke's awe and excitement in New Hope when he said, "You fought in the Clone Wars?!" to Ben Kenobi. It was so pointless and anti-climactic, it just didn't seem like anything a restless farm boy could get excited about. Terrible writing, George. |

Obviously it's not too surprising when people who don't care for the PT overall don't care for Clones but I'm still always a little surprised to see how many PT fans don't like it.
I've always thought it was fairly inoffensive and over the past few years have even come to think the good outweighs the bad. More or less, anyway. |
