I just finished Empire. It was the least mucked with and also my favourite.

Other than the Emperor being changed to match ROTJ and Boba Fett's voice changing - I didn't notice anything different.

PQ was good, but not reference. I did notice new things, like the snow in the Wampa cave being obviously not real snow, the lines in the Walker commander's face, the transport ships in the background in the hangar etc.

The sound however was killer!

One screwup I noticed and I'm not sure if it is new, or part of the Special Edition DVDs, when Lando walks into the room after 3PO was blown to pieces the frame momentarily shrinks. Seriously Lucas. You couldn't fix that???? Sad.

But what really drove home for me was the puppet work of Frank Oz. THAT IS HOW YODA IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK. The CGI Yoda is pathetic!

Oh, one final thing. Not having the 'Your listening to THX' intro = super gay.

Update: Watching ROTJ - the scene where Ben is telling Luke about his sister - it's like there's a pane of glass between the viewer and Ben - WTH??? Lucas can add a completely pointless frickin creature at Jabba's palace, but he can't fix this oddity????

Framiliarize yourself with the workings of a camera lens before making comments like this

First the camera focuses on the box of C3PO parts, then wan Lando enters, the focus shifts to him

The act of refocusing the lens on Lando doesn't make the frame shrink, but zooms out slightly. There's still the same amount of image, but you're seeing it from ever so slightly further away.

Pfft. There's aspects of the films and changes I don't care for. But that isn't one of them.

I'm not so much of a fanatic on SW that Lucas' changes bother me. Personally I think the updated effects on the original 3 films made them mesh better with the newer trilogy. I think the original 3 would have looked too dated in comparison.

It is after all, Lucas' vision, his stories, his art and if he feels changing them closer to how he would have made the films today, more power to him. It's art after all and as such, gets interpreted various ways by different people. Like LOR, there are die-hard fans who memorize every word, each frame and it becomes almost an obsession to get lost or immersed in. I think it's sad that as an artist, you can't change your film like a written work or painting without people freaking out.

That said, it may have been a good idea to have included the original versions for those deeply embedded into them but I'm fine with them. They are so detailed you can see the brush marks in the blue paint on R2D2's shell and I love that stuff. It shows the evolution of the films in terms of work, effects, money invested and of course vision. Brilliant transfers despite the limitations of some of the sources.

For me it seems to only show up at different times. Not all the time.

Why it's this way, I do not know.

I've watched:

Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Empire Strikes Back

I'd give the AQ on all 5/5, but for some reason the AQ on Empire sounds superior to Phantom and Attack.

You may very well be right.

I agree. They gave him very juvenile dialog.

I finally caved and bought The Complete Saga about an hour and a half ago. Currently watching Empire, and it looks great on my 720p TV.

Just finished ROTJ and my first viewing of the Saga in chronological Episode order I through VI complete. Definitely a new experience for the Saga on BD.

I take serious issue with some of the pro reviews I've read out there. You can see plenty of pores on faces, for example, throughout, most notably on Mark Hamil and Ian McDiarmid's makeup. Harrison Ford's face is especially noteworthy on Endor after the Death Star explosion. Also VERY high detail in the makeup of Sebastian Shaw. There is definitely no waxy face here, other than Carrie Fisher's makeup. I never did notice the blood on Han's fingers after Leia gets shot, either. The blinking Ewoks are pretty cool. Very natural and well executed, especially on the baby Ewoks when 3PO is telling his story. Did they do the whole eyes or was the lighting refined for the Blu-ray? I also noticed much more detail when Vader is looking for Luke under the stairwell. My initial impression was brightness/gamma/lighting but it could just be excellent shadow detail. I don't recall seeing the pupils before, either. Most noticeable on Wicket but also on the Chief and a couple others. Audio wise, it's a great mix. Best use of surrounds since TPM. I heards animals, speeder bikes, Ewoks, and blasters. The Battle of Endor. Is. Awesome.

WRT the most infamous change, the "noooo" my initial impression actually watching it in the movie wasn't nearly as negative to when I saw it on youtube when the news broke. I was almost in favor of it at the time it actually happened on the first full viewing. Once the credits finished, I was back to wishing he would leave it out, but now I'm back to being conflicted. I really didn't mind it... if I haven't mentioned it before, Vader's "moment of truth" is my single most favorite moment in the entire saga. I've watched it at least hundreds of times at the movies, on VHS, cable/sat/tv, DVD, and now Blu-ray... I would have been really interested in my reaction if I hadn't heard all the angst on the interwebs about it... I remember initially being confused when the SE first came out and was about to start humming the yub yub song and the new Williams score started. I now love that so much better than the yub-yub and think this may have the potential to get there, as well. It wasn't poorly executed as Hayden Christensen ghost looking down and then in a seemingly different direction from Alec Guinness and the Yoda Muppet... I'll give it some more thought and probably watch just that chapter again in the next day or two.

Question

So I finally got my Complete Saga from Fox Connect and I think I might have a defective disc. Anyone else get major pixelation and digital artifacts in TPM or any of the other discs other discs (not talking about picture quality, but actual errors in playback, see pic below)?

I'm watching in my HTPC and get this digital error every few minutes in both Total Media Theatre 5 and PowerDVD 11. Video card is an AMD HD4890 with latest drivers.

I haven't seen anything like this with any of my other Blus.

Here's a pic ...

Anyone out there received a bad disc or a bad group of discs?

Ok, so I just finished ROTJ......

On the subject of the Ewoks blinking. Ok, they made Wicket blink. It actually looked ok. But then why the F did they not make any other Ewok blink????

What the hell was the point?

And the Noooooooo! wasn't as bad as I anticipated, although it completely was unnecessary.

Finally, I actually threw up in my mouth when I saw Hayden Christiansen at the end of the movie with Obi Wan and Yoda. Completely and totally unnecessary!!!!

Screw you Lucas!

I'd say you missed at least 3 other Ewoks blinking.

Oh well...
That would have been a nice idea. A guy on another board even suggested having Han walk around him and not stepping on the tail at all. As he said, of course some fans would then start complaining about "how could Han walk around him with his tail in the way"? People would just have to deal with that. I'd rather that inconsistency be there then the ridiculous tail-stepping we do have. Although, I'm one that doesn't like that scene anyway.

He should have Jabba bouncing around on his tail, echoing Yoda jumping around like an idiot in AOTC.

He should also wear bling.
