To me it was always that Luke was the vehicle of restoring the Jedi as a "power for good", and that's what Vader's redemption meant — before Lucas narrowed the whole thing into a story about just one person (Anikin), who he never gave us a reason to even like or care about, and peed it all away. (Along the way, never showing us the Jedi being a "force for good" in any case.) As I recall it, prior to Jedi being released, Lucas' then-current version of "what I always intended to do" was that there would be a trilogy to follow episode VI, that was specifically about the battle to restore the Jedi philosophy to the galaxy. So Lucas deciding there wouldn't be any more was a big letdown. What did you think, rikraq? Were you around then yourself? |

Well firstly to Luke, but after to new Jedis. As Yoda died the Skywalkers should had started to teach children to become Jedis. Otherwise there wouldn't had been much any points to teach Luke to become one.

At the time I took it to mean the Jedi order and that hasn't changed. Obviously that was manifested through Luke (and to a lesser extent Leia) but to the best of my recollection the idea that the title refered specifically to Luke was never even on my radar.

The first time I saw Return of the Jedi I have always seen it as both to Jedi Order and to the Skywalker family. They are the last of the Jedi in every sense.

Back during the original production of the films, Jedi actually referred to Luke Skywalker, since none of us growing up in that period had any idea just how expansive the Star Wars universe was. All we knew were about the Rebellion, the Empire and their struggle. The original trilogy was all about Luke becoming a Jedi. There was no mention about other Jedi's and only referred to Luke's father as being a Jedi.

Ben told Luke the Jedi kept order in the galaxy or something to that effect. He said they were betrayed and wiped out by Anakin. Yoda said he was training Jedi for hundreds of years (the whole 'my own counsel I will keep' bit). Tarken tells Vader he was all that was left of their [I forget the exact noun...number, maybe?]. Sure, they didn't call it the Jedi order [edit: or maybe they did...I can't really be sure now that I think about it] or talk about the temple or the counsel but it was pretty clear even back then that the Jedi were an organization of some sort and not just a handful of crazy old wizards. Harrison Ford Open To Playing Han Solo Again In Future 'Star Wars' Films
With Disney set to produce more Star Wars movies after buying up LucasFilms, a star of the classic trilogy now says he's open to being a part of the sequels. Harrison Ford, who (if you live under a rock) played Han Solo, has said he's excited to be a part of the upcoming films, according to Entertainment Weekly. "Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are," the mag quotes from a reliable source. If you are wondering who the "all three of them" is referring to, that'd be the rest of the main cast: Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. This is despite Ford's earlier disdain for the character. He told ABC news in 2010, "As a character he was not so interesting to me." In the same chat, he went on to say his character was written to die in Return of the Jedi, but creator George Lucas preferred to sell more toys of the character instead - which would be an easier sell if the character was alive. I worry most about Carrie Fischer returning.
Harrison Ford I can see returning. Mark Hamill can probably pull it off, too, but he'd have to hit the gym a little bit (he doesn't need to be "buff" or anything, but he needs to lose a few pounds). I wouldn't want them to be the absolute main focus of the new films, but it would be nice to have them involved to a reasonable degree. I could see Luke taking on a similar role as Obi Won in Episode IV. Carrie, however, just hasn't aged very well, quite frankly, she has her mental issues, and with all due respect to her, she seems like a bit of a mess these days. When she talks these days she just sounds kind of 'slurry' to me, and sometimes I get the feeling that she's not "all there". I just think that any attempt to have her reprise her role will not work out well. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe she can pull it off, but I just can't picture that happening. If they do use her, hopefully it's VERY minimally. If anyone is interested in her bizarreness, I suggest checking this out if you have a chance: This is the complete series of "Get A Life", which was just released withint he past couple of months. It's a sitcom that aired on Fox for 2 seasons in the early 90s that has a solid cult following. It's about a 30-year-old paperboy and all of the very strange situations that he gets himself into. I think most or all of the episodes have a standard commentary by series producer David Mirkin, but one rather bizarre and (IMO) disturbingly hilarious episode called "Spewey and Me" (about an alien from space who comes to earth, and beats up on Chris and spews goo all over everything, and Chris is convinced that he's come to earth to teach everyone about love) has a hidden extra commentary which isactivated by clicking on a picture of the Spewey alien on the DVD menu. For some reason this hidden commentary has David Mirkin and Carrie Fisher (yes, it really is her!) discussing the episode. I have no idea why she's on there she had no involvement with the show to my knowledge. I suppose because it's an episode that involves an alien and she was in Star Wars? At any rate, the commentary is probably more bizarre than the episode itself, which is no easy feat! While I can understand people not wanting to buy this set just for the commentary if you have no other interest in the series, itself, if you can get it on netflix or borrow it from someone who has it, I recommend checking it out just for how surreal it is. ![]() |
