100% Agree. Say what you will about the prequels, but John Williams is a genius, and his music for the films was outstanding.

There is nothing to debate. Look at RottenTomatoes, for example. Empire has a 96% rating while ANH has a 93%.

BTW, I got to see Star Wars in Concert back in 2010 and it was amazing.

Empire is the more "entertaining" film, but is dependent on Star Wars, which can stand alone and was already a classic.

And I'm sick of folks using Rotten Tomatoes as the defining form of measurement. Thats like using the Oscars as the defining example for films.

I used to be an Empire guy but over time, the first installment has an honesty that gets lost in the other chapters.

Though I happen to like TESB the best, I could not agree more with what you've said here.

I never understand why some people feel the need to establish their own opinions as "fact". Perhaps a whole lot of people agree with you, but that doesn't mean that there isn't room for opposing viewpoints.

Film, like all art, is subjective. There is no "best". There's "most popular", but that's not the same thing.

Are you kidding? Aside from Duel of the Fates there is not one memorable piece in the entire PT! Those were the only two times I have known JW to mail it in.

What a dull world that would be.

John Williams is definitely one of the truly irreplaceable figures in Star Wars history. The main theme was incredible, the character themes were all equally powerful but even minor cues and segues were absolutely perfect.

And I agree that the prequel scores were all excellent as well. They don't have as many standout moments but that's largely because he resisted the urge to reinvent the wheel. There's a lot of good new stuff in there but he didn't cast aside the solid foundation he laid in the OT.

edit: Speaking of John Williams and segues, two nights ago the Chicago White Sox hosted Star Wars night. The game sucked but the promotion (which culminated in post-game fireworks accompanied by Star Wars music) was pretty fun. In addition to all the dress-up and whatnot they showed clips from the various movies on the DiamondVision board between innings. Most of the clips were OT oriented but Duel of Fates was one of the PT clips to make the cut and it was pretty cool.

And - second segue - it kind of made me want to watch TPM again. Which I just did. And I have to admit, every time I see it the horrible stuff gets a little more bearable and most of the cool stuff gets a little cooler. And now that I'm no longer as distracted or disappointed by the horrible stuff I'm able to look a little more fairly on things I originally dismissed.

TPM still isn't good but it gets a touch closer every time I watch it. And I didn't even have to hit chapter forward on the remote or anything

The whole score of Episode III is phenomenal and very moving.

I enjoy all three scores for the Prequels. So much so that the film would probably be better with just the score and no dialogue. That would make some great fan edits. Turn the prequels into silent films.

The dialog are the prequels biggest problems Jar Jar aside IMO. So as pure visual spectacles with the great music they have, converting them into silent films experimentally isn't such a bad idea.

I actually hated the score for most of AOTC. Some of it was kind of weird and quirky when people were just sitting around talking.

Agreed! But, I'm biased as ROTS is my favorite of the saga.

Glad to see this thread is right where I left it. The typical's doing their typical thing. Don't any of you ever take time off to enjoy the real world or is this all you have left in life.

Myself, I've been on a wonderful vacation buying Blu-rays and taking in a magical concert. I was 10 rows from John Williams as he conducted many of his amazing compositions including 3 works from Star Wars. Truly magical and not spoiled by a single moron spouting off some of the crap that continues to get flung around in this mod approved thread. Ah the real world.... it's so wonderful!

I dunno about the whole score, there's still too much music tracked in from Phantom Menace, but the rest of it is some of John Williams' best work in years. Battle of the Heroes, Anakin's Dark Deeds, Padme's Ruminations, all stellar stuff.

Those are not what I would call memorable (not bad) to anyone other than to Star Wars junkies. Duel of the Fates everyone knows, Imperial March everyone knows, The main Star Wars theme everyone knows.. that's all Im saying. Nothing spectacular/memorable to me from those latter films and really from ROTJ (maybe the end fight with Vader when Luke goes nuts) either. You could take anyone off the street blindfold them play those and I am willing to bet the would not even guess Star Wars film. I am not going to argue the technical merits of JW but he did not create a knockout punch in my mind for ROTS.

That's great! Unfortunately JW is not touring in my area but I am going to the symphony next weekend in Ft. Worth with my wife to hear "Star Wars and Beyond" a JW tribute by the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra (Box Seats). I will get to hear memorable work like E.T., Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, The Imperial March, Schindler's List, TPM, Saving Private Ryan, Close Encounters etc.

*very good chance I could be working the message board at the concert though.

For what it's worth, Star Wars currently occupies the 125th spot on the 1.000 best films list compiled annually by more than 3.300 film critics for the TSPDT website. (They shoot pictures don't they.)

The Empire Strikes Back currently holds the 288th place.
