What? What kind of sense does that make?

Ignore him. He just likes to bait people, he's been doing it for years.

I just watched Star Wars on laserdisc. I didn't miss any of the new changes.

I think it's possibe that they can. If they release the original versions just like they were first seen in the theaters(restored of course but nothing changed contentwise) people would be happy. Who would complain about it? The movies were like that when they were released.

I don't have high hopes of the Disney Original Trilogy Blurays, since the company messes up with its own classic films on Bluray (see signature)

There is, of course, controversy on how Disney has been restoring their animated classics. Their approach has been to give the appearance of clean cell frame versus "film".

I will say I watched Mary Poppins some time back which was remastered and was impressed (other than a hair of EE seen at times) - hopefully they take the same approach with the OT Star Wars.

Surely they'd be better than what Lucas has put out so far. Not that the current blu-ray set is a travesty or anything, but anything Disney releases will likely be an improvement. A 4K remaster alone will be an improvement over the 10 year old 2K transfer used for the 2004 DVD and 2011 blu-ray.

People who have grown accustomed to the minor fixes, like removing matte boxes and things like that would be unhappy, I'm sure. Like I said, they won't please everyone. I will be pleased pretty much no matter what, as long as these films get 4K remasters and things like Vader yelling "Nooo!" and Hayden Christensen's force ghost go bye-bye.

I think there is a big difference between cleaning up an animated film and cleaning up a real film, as far as intent and motivation. As someone else said, they seem to want their animated movies to look as close to the animated cells as possible, which makes some sense. That motivation doesn't exist for non-animated films.

Those are animated films though. Disney are smart enough to not make every Star Wars movie look like the BD version of Phantom Menace.

Well, that is why I pointed out Mary Poppins. There is good hope and they traditionally prioritize theatrical versions of movies.

As Han would say: I know. But it'd be nice to have that stuff on a legit release along with a 4K remaster of the movie. None of the fan editors have got that far AFAIK.

If a group of fans do a 4K reconstruction for free, they'll be be sent away for evaluation.

Otherwise it's not the original theatrical version.
We're the "mattes" visible on the original releases when watching them in the cinema circa 77-83?
