Those trilogy sets do have the commentaries, which are very good. I didn't think the special features on the complete BD set were that great anyway. The best features are the main documentaries on the DVD releases. The episode one documentary is better than the movie.

I agree with you there. That's why I have kept my 2004 set. It has that fourth disc with the Empire of Dreams doc.

Empire of Dreams is great , curious why it is relegated to DVD
That said
The Complete BD set has those nostalgic original TV documentaries
The Making of Star Wars in particular is Gold
Back then , sure, I had my Starlog subscription
but no internet and no Star Wars conventions
So, those TV specials were mini events themselves

If you miss any of the days, the feed will be uploaded on YouTube a couple hours after the end of each day.

I almost wonder if they would do individual UOT releases; release one on Blu-Ray either when a new one comes out, or while it's still playing in theaters.

Have you ever noticed, there's a lot of sevens.

7 months between April and December when the 7th film in a series that was first released in 1977. Also the trailer says Christmas, but it's being released on December 18th and there are 7 days between the 18th and the 25th of December.

April
May
June
July
August
September
October
November

December

(in case anyone doesn't know what "between" means)

Several posts about an announcement of the "unaltered" OT being released on BD.....

Any articles that suggest that may happen?

I LOATHE the '97 and '11 Editions!
The '11 editions fixed a lot of the errors made by the '04 editions, ie. pink lightsabers

I think it's just speculation with a dash of wishful thinking. I'm confident they are coming and will be released at some point (at the latest when the new trilogy is complete). However, they may just be focusing on the future of Star Wars at this point, with that being the focus of the Celebration event.

But we still got three days, so who knows?

It's definitely an improvement over the DVD's, tech-quality wise. The DVDs had a really weird, darker color-timing that caused excessive black crush and those pink lightsabers. It also had problems with the audio mix, like reversed channels and the score being mixed out of the 5.1 track in certain cases (or overpowered by the sound effects at least).

The DVD's were kind of rubbish, to be honest. From what I understand the picture quality, color-timing, and audio mixes are all big improvements on the Blu-Ray set. It's the content I'm not a fan of, so I didn't buy it (I only watch fan-made DVD editions of the UOT right now).

Yeah but so did the '04 versions (replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen at the end of Return of the Jedi)

The '04 version was the '97 version on steroids. At least in the '97 version, Sebastian Shaw is left in tact.

The DVDs use the same underlying transfers as the Blu-rays. Yes, the Blu's have had some tweaks to the picture but they've simply adjusted the things which stood out most on the DVD (that weird-ass blue fringing in Star Wars, the visible saber cores in Jedi) while other things like garbage mattes and the issues with strange coloured sabers (Luke on the Falcon, Vader's pink saber) are still there throughout the movies, make no mistake. The jacked up colour and contrast is still there on both versions, only they've lowered the gamma slightly for the Blu so's the blacks aren't quite as all-consuming. And although the Blu-rays sport a lot more detail, they also make the frozen LowryGrain™ from the 'restoration' a lot more obvious too.

I'll give you the audio though, they remixed Star Wars from scratch and it's a much smoother & well balanced mix which has none of the harshness & clipping sported by the overbearing mixes for Empire and Jedi (which are much the same on Blu as they are on DVD, lossless encoding aside). Shame they had to spoil it by adding that rank new scream from Obi-Wan, but there we are: what George giveth, he taketh away.

As someone who's only seen the unaltered trilogy maybe once when I was too young to care on VHS I would definetly buy the unaltered original trilogy. i generally don't like changes to movies like this and would be really interested to see Star Wars as it was originally released.

It's vaguely reminiscent of a sound that used to be made by an area vagrant while exposing himself. Hearing it come from Obi-Wan...brings strange feelings to my heart.

On the other hand, the previous version always made me wonder, "What are the sandpeople running away for?"

I don't wonder anymore. So there's that.

The problem though is that it sounds like you or I recorded ourselves just making a stupid whooping noise into a microphone and the guys behind the desk said, yeah lets go with that.

But I will admit, as a kid, I always wondered why they were running away too

It's because Obi-Wan's emulating the cry of a Krayt Dragon (supposedly) which is something even the Sand People are scared of. The original effect sounded great (even though the sound was re-used for the dewbacks which aren't so scary ), the bird-like call in the '04 version was not scary in the least, and the '11 version is plain ****ed up. As said above, it sounds like something a kid knocked together in about 5 minutes, but because the rest of the mix is sooooo much better than the DVD I just grit my teeth and get on with it.

Yes, you'll find that there were a few of us who pointed this out way back a thousand pages or so back when the details emerged about the release. Some folks found this idea really offensive, that this wasn't the "definitive" release - but it was clear that it wasn't. The Blu-ray extras were rather lackluster, and some of what was included was really junk compared to what could have been on it. At the time it was obvious that stuff was being held back, and once the Disney sale was announced, it was very clear why.

I do think the OT needs new commentaries, real ones. Not pieced together (though, that does make it amusing, as Lucas contradicts himself so often when you mix together things he said at various times). I really hope that while everyone was together in England they did something in that vein.
